Weekly Athletic Update, 05/1/18

Records and PR’s were the order of the day as WA’s Track & Field teams competed against the top teams in NEPSAC on a mild Saturday afternoon at Belmont Hill School. Both teams competed on a high note in the quad meet and secured wins over all but the host school on the boy’s side and to Thayer Academy on the girl’s side. Coco Arcand continues to excel winning both the 1500m and the 3000m while teammates Mia Conte, Alexis Cagan, Rachel O’Keefe and Caitlin McNamara won the 4 X 100m relay. The 880m race saw WA’s Gabby Gavala and Gabby Conte finish 2 and 3 respectively to earn significant meet points for the Hilltoppers.

  • On the boy’s side Junior Nick Ng had a 1st in the 300 hurdle (41.6), senior Ettiene Picotte won the 400m (52.2), Zukudo Igwenagu captured the triple jump 39.3 and Victor Pizzotti won the Shot Put with a throw of 41.8.
  • Both Crew teams were in action on Saturday and the teams placed in the following order: boy’s 1st boat finished 5th out of 6; 2nd boat 4th out of 5. On the girls’ side WA secured a 3rd place finish (4 teams competed) in the 1st boat while the 2nd boat finished 2nd out of 4 teams on the afternoon.
  • Baseball bats perked up in a 7-5 loss to prep power St. Sebastian School on Monday but lagged a bit over the weekend in a double header split with new Central Mass Baseball League rival, Providence Country Day School. Lots of exciting baseball remains as the team hopes to hit its collective stride!
  • Weather continues to have an adverse effect on our tennis programs. The boy’s only match of the week was canceled due to rainy conditions while the girls’ team split a pair of matches, dropping a 3-2 match to Bancroft before racing past Wilbraham & Monson on Saturday.
  • Softball lost a heartbreaker (11-10) on Monday as the host Williston Northampton team rallied for runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to secure the win. Noble and Greenough’s arms and bats proved to be too much on Saturday as the ISL power cruised past the visiting Hilltoppers.
  • Girls’ lacrosse scored in bunches against the Waring School, eventually wearing down the opponents from the North Shore by a 24-12 count. On Saturday, the team travelled to Western Mass to take on Wilbraham & Monson and in a highly competitive contest the team fell just short, dropping a 13-10 outcome. Wednesday’s rematch with Portsmouth Abbey will be a good one!
  • The combined MS/JV baseball team won back to back games for the 1st time this season as they pushed past Wilbraham & Monson on Saturday.
