Weekly Athletic Update, 04/24/18

Five weeks into the spring season and we’re just starting to feed off the energy and good feelings that warm temperatures and sunny skies provide. Our girls’ varsity lacrosse team is riding the crest of an impressive four game win streak and is scoring goals in bunches. The McShea’s (Grace ’19 and Claire ’22) led the scoring parade on Saturday in a convincing 18-5 win over the MacDuffie School. Senior tri-captain Shelia Gadbois had a productive offensive week as well punctuated by an impressive performance on Wednesday in a road win over the Winchendon School.
  • Amy Herlihy’s varsity girls’ tennis team is on a steak as well posting consecutive 4-3 wins during the week to push their undefeated mark to 5-0. Junior Sarah Saber’s 2nd singles 10-7 victory was the difference in Wednesday’s nail biter over Wilbraham & Monson.
  • The Deerfield Relays provided a bit of a different approach to team scoring on Saturday (Individual scores are combined to reflect multiple entrants in events). Our girls’ mid-distance efforts were solid throughout the meet and our junior team of Naomi Dyer, Tanya Gauthier, Kaitlin Hogan and Stella Gray grabbed the days only 1st place finish for WA in the 4 x 200m relay event. The day’s best performance on the boys’ side was in the discus as Zukudo Igwengau, Josh Isakson and Giovanni Blue took a 3rd place.
  • Varsity boys’ lacrosse dropped a heartbreaker in OT on Saturday by a 6-5 count to NMH, but showed good resiliency in bouncing back from Wednesday’s tough outing against a very talented Portsmouth Abbey squad.
  • Boys’ tennis is competing hard and getting better but came up on the short end of both matches during the week, losing to both the Williams School and to Wilbraham & Monson.
  • Softball dropped a pair of high scoring contests losing to BB&N and Suffield and varsity baseball lost to Deerfield and Phillips Andover (DH) in league play. Both teams will look to get back on track with key contests during the upcoming week. Pitching is always a premium in the spring as the games come at a fast and furious pace and the window closes quickly if the arms falter.
  • Crew finally got some much needed practice time in at the Lake and while the race results from Wednesday and Saturday weren’t spectacular, the effort and reduced times were noteworthy.
  • Varsity golf travelled to NMH on Wednesday and lot by a 222-209 count.
