Weekly Athletic Update, 04/11/18

Someone forgot to tell Mother Nature that the clock has turned and spring has arrived. As a result of the all too familiar cold, rainy weather pattern that permeates the northeast in early April we have not yet settled in on any consistent approach to our training. Practice sessions have been sporadic and for the most part indoors as coaches and players improvise as best they can to simulate the outdoor conditions that spring contests bring. Twelve Upper School teams will eventually find their stride and compete at the interscholastic level while our Middle School will offer six teams.

Of all the spring offerings lacrosse seems best suited to adapt to the outdoor conditions and to that end, both US teams have been able to play all of their scheduled contests to date.

  • Mrs. Berberian has taken over the head coaching position for our girls’ varsity lacrosse team and remains in search of that 1st victory, having dropped opening contests to Portsmouth Abbey (on the road) and to Cheshire Academy at home on Saturday. Grace McShea ’19 led the scoring parade in Saturday’s game as the Hilltoppers showed signs of coming together in the 2nd half of the 13-6 loss.
  • The boys’ lacrosse schedule is loaded with tough opponents out of the gate and despite decent performances is off to an 0-3 start. Road loses to ISL power, Milton and to Suffield Academy were sandwiched around a heartbreaking 11-10 home loss to Cheshire Academy last Wednesday. The team will look to get on track on Wednesday as they host the Winchendon School at Morse Field at 3:30 pm.
  • Track & Field competed in Saturday’s meet at the Governor’s Academy and junior Coco Arcand broke the school record in the 3000m by more than :20 seconds. Her time of 10:20 will be challenged and perhaps surpassed once the warm temperatures arrive and training regimens improve. Congratulations to Coco!
  • We welcome Colleen Carlson on board as our Head Boys’ tennis coach and congratulate her and the team on their opening match victory over Portsmouth Abbey last Saturday. Monday’s match at Moses Brown will conclude a very active 10 days for the team as they continue to battle the elements along with their limited training schedule.
  • Girls’ varsity tennis took advantage of sunny conditions in the later part of the day on Saturday and utilized a strong showing by their doubles teams to push past Portsmouth Abbey, 4-3. The team will have a week to prepare for their next match on Friday, 4/13 when they host Dana Hall at 5:00 pm
  • Varsity baseball jumped out to an early lead in their home opener against the Pingree School but faltered down the homestretch and dropped an 11-10 decision. The week ahead looms big as home contests with league rivals Cushing (Wednesday at 3:30 pm) and Exeter (DH starting at 2:00 pm) will provide a glimpse of things to come in 2018.
