Weekly Athletics Update — January 30, 2023

In an abbreviated week caused by a Monday snow day, and a slew of canceled Wednesday contests (storm forecast that never materialized), WA teams and athletes put the winter season on pause for a bit. The weekend was packed with contests and once again WA teams took to the road for competitions.

  • Girls’ ice hockey found their winning formula as they grabbed a pair of nice wins in Maine. On Saturday, the team skated past Kents Hill in a game that was never close and on Sunday afternoon, the defense took over in a 3-0 shutout win over North Yarmouth Academy. Senior Erika Parenti enjoyed a 2-goal, 3 assist weekend to pace the Hilltoppers. St. Mark’s will provide the opposition on Wednesday as the Hilltoppers travel to Southborough for a 5:15 pm game.

  • Boys’ Hockey also travelled north and dropped a pair of contests. On Friday, the team jumped out early and pressured Berwick (Holt conference game) but couldn’t sustain their effort in dropping a 9-5 decision. Sunday’s road trip to Vermont Academy was played in more of a defensive mindset, however, WA came up on the short end of a 3-1 contest. The team travels to Portsmouth Abbey on Wednesday before returning home on Saturday to face off against NYA at the WIC.

  • Girls’ Basketball turned the tables on the Rivers School with a tidy 61-48 win on Friday evening here on Rowe Court. Senior Oluchi Okananwa exploded for 22 points in the 2nd half en route to a 27-point outing to pace the 11-5 Hilltoppers. Kailee McDonald ’24 scored 17 points in the win! WA will square off on Wednesday here on Rowe Court with a 3:30 pm contest against Marianapolis Prep.

  • Our ski team received plaudits from their coaching staff for their toughness and spirit in preparing for their 1st Slalom race of the season (without any training in this event) at the mountain on Friday. Ysabel Lobo ’25 returned to form with a solid showing and the resiliency of the group was evident throughout the race.

  • Swim team came away with a pair of impressive wins on Saturday afternoon in Daniels pool. Special thanks to our 4 Middle School swimmers who came in to bolster our boys’ roster and contribute to a 40-38 victory over Thayer. The boys’ had 3 individual winners on the afternoon Hung Truong, Evan Li and Keyan Padgett. The girls’ team had 5 individual winners (Olivia Bull had a pair of 1sts; Sophie Unfricht, Claire Puffer, Elise Drake, and Grace Qui) in a 59-34 win.

  • Tyler Hughes ’24 and Robert Perniak ’25 both scored 12 points to lead the V2 team over Marianapolis Prep in Connecticut on Saturday morning. It is a busy week ahead for the V2 with 3 contests scheduled including a Monday eve game against Cushing here at Rowe Court.

  • The 3rds basketball team continues to roll as they cruised past Cushing by a 49-31 score. Liam Daly registered a double-double (including 19 points) as the 3rds improved to 6-0.
