Are you looking for an art form that develops real world skills like problem-solving, organization, communication, and self-confidence? Perhaps Worcester Academy Theater is for you. Using a collaborative approach, classes and co-curricular opportunities will engage you as an artist and as an audience member as you explore a range of theater genres including classical texts, musicals, and original works.

Your year-long Introduction to Theatre will lead you through a variety of topics, periods, and plays while you create projects, performance pieces, and written work. Then it’s on to a broad array of course offerings including Theater Practicum, Directing, Scene Study, Costume Design (where your work will be featured in our productions), and more.

You’ll create and collaborate in excellently conceived practice/classroom space, in the Worcester Academy Performance Center (a flexible performance space opened in 2016), or in our historic Warner Theater (designed and built by Harry Warner, founding partner of Warner Bros. Studios).

You’ll tackle a wide variety of challenges from special effects to mobile set pieces. Want more? Prepare yourself for theater beyond Worcester Academy by taking charge of lighting or sound operation, stage management, and more.
  • Costume Crew Backstage, our costume crew students run the show! As a dresser, make-up, hair stylist, or garment master, you’ll gain the ability to think on your feet and the confidence to turn backstage chaos into a well-oiled system.
  • Theater Council This student-run organization serves as an advocate for students in our theater programs. Our council organizes events, helps with productions, and offers advice and feedback to faculty members.
  • Commissioned Work – Mentioned above, our Theater students work with professional playwrights to create and perform original work.
  • A Play plus Community Organization – Our Theatre Practicum students create original work about our shared history. Through our collaboration with Historic New England, they create plays based on the historic Codman House in Lincoln, Massachusetts.  In turn, they present these plays to our community.
  • Our Artist-in-Residence Program brings master classes from theatre experts far and wide.
