Choral and Instrumental Arts in the Classroom

Whether you carry your instrument in a case or have it with you always in your excellent vocal chords, our dynamic and interactive performance-based program will enhance and refine your artistry within multiple musical styles.

Upper School curricular ensembles include Wind Ensemble and Orchestra for our instrumental artists, and Chorus and Advanced Chorus for our vocal artists. We offer several levels (including AP) of Music Theory and, for those who just can’t get enough, our Music Study offers individual and small group lessons that are sculpted to meet the needs and interests of individuals.
Want more? How about trying new courses like The History of American Popular Music or our first-ever Ethnomusicology class, Music and Cultures, team taught with our History and Languages Departments.
You’ll work, study and perform in our historic Warner Theater (designed and built by Harry Warner, founding partner of Warner Bros. Studios), in choral music space, and in our soon-to-come-online sound recording studio.

Choral and Instrumental Arts Co-Curricular

Outreach and “In-Reach”
  • Jazz Lab – An introductory exploration of Jazz performance, students learn to execute jazz lead sheets and work on basic improvisational techniques.
  • Academy Singers – Broaden your musical knowledge and explore arrangement and technique with this audition-only group. Academy singers cover a broad range of genres and styles.
  • Hillpoppas – Does a cappella amaze you? Become part of the whole and find your own perfect pitch with our very own Hillpoppas.
  • Jazz Combo – An audition-only ensemble, this rehearsal and performance group is designed for intermediate-to-advanced instrumentalists. The ensemble’s repertoire includes major innovators of Jazz throughout jazz history.
  • Annual Musical – Both the Middle and Upper schools produce musicals every year. Every second year, both divisions work together on an all-school musical.  Our instrumental and choral students are the backbone of it all – creating our orchestra, melding our chorus, and hatching our latest stars.
  • Our Artist-in-Residence Program brings master classes from experts far and wide. Most recently, professional percussionist Michael Wingfield  fascinated students with his master classes on African and New World drumming.
  • Choral Outreach – Our choral groups don’t just sing on campus. You’re likely to see them out-and-about all through the year at various community venues. Our Academy Singers, for example, gave shoppers and botanists a treat at Tower Hill Botanical Garden’s annual Holly Days.
  • Jazz Excursions – Our jazz musicians had a treat this past year with a trip to New York City for master classes at City College of New York and Lincoln Center’s Dizzies Jazz Club.
