Middle School Curriculum

Step on to the Worcester Academy campus any weekday and you’ll be immediately impressed by the vibrant bustle of activity. How do we keep our middlers involved, inquisitive and happy? By engaging them in their own learning process and immersing them in a well-planned, well-charted course of academic engagement that’s layered with directed activities and superior support.
All of this is woven into the framework of a classical preparatory education, so important for students as they progress into our Upper School and beyond.
With an enviable 7:1 student-teacher ratio, it means our class sizes are small and students get the attention they need. Our faculty members are in a unique position to devote attention to your child. That important ratio allows us to understand each child’s particular learning style and allows our students to follow paths that excite them.
Our commitment to engaging your child doesn’t stop at the classroom. We offer a wide range of extracurricular activities that keep your child interested and involved. Our Middle School fields over a dozen athletics teams, has a full array of visual and performing arts offerings, and offers an unprecedented choice of clubs and community service activities. At Worcester Academy we understand that middle school should be a safe place to try something new and we make a commitment to offer your child new opportunities and the space to let his/her passion grow. Where else do you find middle school students who:

  • Take their passion for Mathematics out of the classroom and compete with Math Teams across the area. Last year’s Middle School Math Team, in fact, placed 1st at the Intermediate Math League of Eastern Massachusetts meet, picking up all three top-scorer awards, including the only perfect score.
  • Unsettled by the knowledge that our neighboring public elementary school was without a library, our Destination Imagination team developed a project plan to create a space for those younger students. Their project not only created that library and stocked it with books but also took the team to Destination Imagination Global Finals and garnered them an award.
The fun doesn’t end with extra-curricular activities! To help your child develop socially, we organize and offer dances, field trips, a Field Day and other group activities throughout the year. Middle School is an important time for creating relationships and, although some of our activities are optional, we want all of our middlers to experience these important steps in bonding with friends and developing a little independence:

  • Our 6th graders get to know each other right off the bat with team building days at the beginning and end of their school year at Project Adventure in Beverly, MA
  • Grade 7 is off to Nature’s Classroom in Wakefield, RI for more bonding and discovery.
  • A truly amazing growth experience, our 8th graders head off to a transformative Outward Bound urban trek to New York City.
WORCESTER ACADEMY® is a co-ed day and boarding school for grades 6 to 12 and postgraduates. Our urban setting, diverse community, and innovative curriculum provide each student with unique opportunities for self-discovery, academic achievement, and personal empowerment.
