Middle School Philosophy

Early adolescence is a time marked by significant cognitive, emotional, and physical change. Worcester Academy’s Middle School Program appreciates, and embraces this important and transformative time in the lives of its students. An experienced and dedicated faculty support and guide students as they progress from concrete to abstract thought. Our small class sizes and student-centered approach means each child is known and appreciated for their strengths. Our teachers recognize the nuances of adolescent brain development and employ a wide variety of instructional approaches, materials, and opportunities for personal exploration.

Worcester Academy’s Core Values – Honor, Respect, Responsibility Personal Growth and Challenge – are woven into each aspect of our Middle School Program. Opportunities for character development often begin in our supportive Advisory Program and extend to the classroom, the athletic field, the stage, and the community at-large. Grade level team-building trips and service learning projects offer opportunities for challenge and personal growth. Our middle school program supports and enriches the lives of our students, and positions them well to face the challenges of Worcester Academy’s Upper School and beyond.

Beyond Academics

To support the social development of our students, we organize dances, field trips, a Field Day and other group activities. Our 6th graders travel to Harrington Outdoor Education Center in September for team building activities and journey to NYC to study Ancient Greece at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in November. Our 7th grade travels to Rhode Island for a three-day visit to Nature's Classroom to study estuaries and to build community within their class. A culminating event in the 8th grade is the three-day Outward Bound Urban Trek in New York City.

On campus, our students develop independence by traveling between buildings for courses, participating in our rich co-curricular offerings, and by participating in school wide traditions like the Dexter Prize speaking contest.

Worcester Academy offers a wide range of co-curricular activities that encourage personal growth through exploration and discovery. Many students elect to participate in athletics and the arts as well as our clubs and service learning activities.
