Weekly Athletics Update

  • Varsity Football won their 3rd consecutive game over Evergreen League rival St. Luke’s School on Saturday afternoon at Morse Field. Worcester Academy’s defensive unit continued their streak of keeping opponents under check as they haven’t allowed a touchdown during the current win streak. On this afternoon, the WA offense was more than complementary as the offensive line opened running lanes for the capable WA running backs who took full advantage. The excitement and energy around our Football team is palpable as they prepare for the biggest game in years on Friday evening, hosting Evergreen power, Hamden Hall on Friday evening at Morse Field. To date, Hamden Hall is undefeated in league play and will present a formidable challenge for the surging Hilltoppers.

  • Girls’ Varsity Soccer registered a pair of impressive 1-0 wins, pushing past Nobles on a sunny, Monday afternoon contest at Morse and then travelling to Dexter-Southfield on Saturday in a high-level game that saw WA prevail on a late game penalty kick. Caroline Bierfeldt ’24, a Holy Cross commit, secured the important win for the Hilltoppers as she scored on the PK in the waning minutes of the game. A trip to Deerfield on Wednesday afternoon is up next for the  Hilltoppers.

  • Boys’ Soccer continues their pursuit of a top 4 finish in Class A with a Wednesday workmanlike victory over Exeter at home (3-0 margin) and a back and forth 3-3 tie against Taft in Watertown., Ct. This was a hotly contested match between two of the top teams in New England (Taft is undefeated) and a tying goal in the last 4 minutes of play, sent both teams home content, but anxious for a possible rematch down the road.

  • Field Hockey ran into two formidable opponents as St George’s School (3-2 loss) and Dexter-Southfield put an end to the Hilltoppers 7-game win streak. Wednesday’s home contest (against Lawrence Academy, 3:15 pm at Morse) will present the youthful Hilltoppers the opportunity to get back on track as they pursue a NEPSAC tournament spot.

  • Varsity Volleyball pushed the Pomfret School to the limit on Wednesday before falling in Connecticut on Wednesday. The second road contest of the week saw the Hilltoppers jump out to a 1st set advantage against Dexter-Southfield, but the host team regrouped and sent the Hilltoppers to a tough road loss. Kingswood-Oxford School, always a tough opponent, will visit WA on Wednesday afternoon for a 4:15 pm match on Rowe Court.

  • Varsity Crew raced in the George Dirth Regatta on Sunday in New Hampshire to conclude a 3-week stretch of Fall competition.

  • On the sub-varsity level, the Junior Varsity Soccer team dropped a decision at Wilbraham & Monson on Wednesday and the girls’ Junior Varsity volleyball team split a pair of contests, losing at Pomfret on Wednesday (2-0) and then closing out the week with a nice win at Rectory on Saturday afternoon.

Around the Rim:
Exciting week ahead for our teams, but an early call for our student body to come out and support our Football team on Friday evening. It’s a 6:30 pm contest against Hamden Hall at Morse Field and our team and coaching staff would certainly appreciate a huge gathering of WA fans to support our team!
