Weely Athletics Update

It was a productive week on the water for WA crew as both the Boys’ V1 and V2 boats crossed the finish line in 1st place as they outpaced Derryfield, Marianapolis Prep, Bancroft and Vermont Academy on Saturday afternoon at Lake Quinsigamond. V1’s contingent found Olivia Bull as coxswain, Seamus Lyons in stroke and Kegan Webster, Owen Ferguson and Edward Zhu responsible for posting a winning time of 5:37.3 in the 1500m race. In the V2 boat, Ava O’Tool was coxswain, Brendan Ireland in stroke and Jack Brennan, Yianni Moutoudis and Hung Truong propelled the boat to a time of 6:17.8.  Wednesday saw the BV1 also in a 1stplace finish as they edged Thayer to set the tone for a highly success week of racing. It is encouraging and satisfying to our athletes and coaches to see the fruition of their work being validated in competition. Congratulations to all!

  • Boys’ Track and Field avenged a loss to Marianapolis Prep on Wednesday and came away with a thrilling 1-point win just three days later in a meet at Providence Country Day School. In a total team effort, the team posted additional victories over PCD and BCA. Harry Martel (13 meet points) won the 1500m run, finished 2nd in the Javelin and 3rd in the 3,000m race. Captain Jordy Afonso (10 meet points) won the triple jump and finished 2nd in the long jump. On Wednesday Liam Shields posted a pair of 1st place finishes in the 400m and the 4 X 100 relay and Lio Griffin-Hill also hit the tape 1st in the 4 X 100 relay and won the Triple Jump in impressive fashion.  The girls’ posted a pair of wins against PCD and BCA but Marianapolis Prep had too much firepower as they slipped past WA.

  • Softball continues to roll with a 5-0 shutout road victory at Suffield on Wednesday and a wild 11-1 win over BB&N on Saturday at New Balance Field. Gabby San Inocencio hurled a beauty on Wednesday, striking out 11 batters in the 5-0 shut out win. Kate Foley, Charlotte  Constantine and Hazel Hughes had multiple hits in Saturday’s easy win over BB&N.

  • Baseball rode a combined 3-hit effort from Huxley Holcombe and TJ Power and held off Deerfield by a 3-0 count on Wednesday and atoned for their lone defeat of the season with a thrilling 3-2 win over Andover on Saturday at Gaskill Field. Junior right hander Mav Rizy hurled a beauty and three early runs were enough to hold off a late-inning rally by Andover, pushing the WA 9 to a gaudy 9-1 overall mark.

  • Senior Brendan Roy fired a 0ne over par 36 to lead the Golf team to their 1st win of the season, 212-228 over NMH on Wednesday afternoon. Moses Brown proved too deep on a chilly Monday afternoon at the Ledgemont Country Club, pushing past the Hilltoppers’s by a 163-173 score.

  • Girls’ Tennis won both matches during the week starting off with an impressive road win at Cheshire Academy and finishing with an exciting 4-3 victory over Marianapolis Prep. Junior Grace Gerber has been outstanding  to date and has registered dominant performances in her last three matches, posting shutout wins of 8-0, 6-0 and 8-0. The team has a week to prepare for another road test at Wilbraham & Monson on Saturday.

  • WA boys’ Lacrosse battled two top-tiered New England teams during the week and came away with a pair of defeats despite the competitive nature of both contests. Junior Will Masterson posted 7 goals during the week to add to his team leading numbers. Connor Benoit was outstanding in the nets and the team will look to rebound and get back to the win column when they host the Wheeler School on Wednesday afternoon at Morse Field. Game time is 4:30 pm and will immediately follow the conclusion of the GV Lacrosse game at 3:00 pm.

  • Girls’ Lacrosse will look for that 1st win to jumpstart their season against the St. George’s School on Wednesday. The effort and improvement over the last two weeks has been evident and despite recent setbacks at Dana Hall and at home versus NMH, the team seems to be heading in the right direction.

  • Solid individual performances and spurts of brilliant play have characterized the season-long play of our BV tennis team who will seek out their initial win of the spring season on Wednesday when they host Cushing Academy at 3:30 pm.

  • JV Baseball returned to New Balance Field on Saturday afternoon against Deerfield and the two squads put on a nice display of baseball over the course of the 7-inning contest. Good pitching and solid defense were the hallmarks that both teams brought to the table with the visitors from Western Mass coming away with a 5-0 verdict. The squads will have a quick turnaround and square off again on Wednesday in Deerfield with a 1st pitch set for 4:00 pm.
