Weekly Athletics Update—January 24, 2023

The much-anticipated TD Garden basketball contest was a huge event and by all accounts a well-received evening for Worcester Academy supporters. Tip of the cap to the great work our Development and Advancement group did in pulling together this unique opportunity. Plaudits as well to our Basketball team who played Brewster Academy on even terms for much of the evening before bowing by an 84-76 score. Senior guard Tre Norman poured in a game high 25 points and led the way in this battle of elite Prep programs. The Hilltoppers (14-2) eked out a 78-71 road win in Wilbraham on Wednesday and will travel to Vermont Academy on Wednesday for their next Class AA contest.

  • Varsity girls’ basketball went toe to toe with defending Class A champion Tabor Academy on Wednesday, eventually falling by a 69-64 margin. Junior Cameron Rust poured in a season-high 24 points and corralled 13 rebounds for the home team. On Saturday in Needham, Nobles had the better of the Hilltoppers who have a week to prepare for a return engagement with the Rivers School here on Rowe Court. Game time Friday is 5:30 pm.

  • JV girls’ basketball and our 3rds boys’ basketball teams both continue to impress. Each has pulled together an impressive 5 game winning streak with solid play and plenty of contributions from a deep and ever improving roster.

  • Girls’ ice hockey continues their run of close contests as they played three games over the past week (1-2) with the slimmest of margins between victory and defeat. With a play-off run still in sight the week ahead with contests against Brooks, Kents Hill and NYA will be an important test.

  • Boys’ ice hockey had a terrific win over Pomfret (6-5 score) on Wednesday and then travelled to Yarmouth, Maine on Saturday where they dropped a 2-1 Holt League game. The week ahead will add to the frequent flyer miles as the team plays road games at Pingree, Berwick Academy and finally Vermont Academy on Sunday.

  • Varsity 2 basketball finds itself in a scoring drought and will need to find some scoring punch starting with a road contest at Gann Academy on Wednesday. STM and W & M pushed past the Hilltoppers during the past week of contests.

  • JV Ice hockey dropped a 1-goal contest at the Pomfret School on Friday evening.

  • CMSL results were tabled on Friday as all member schools were not present due to some weather cancellations. Swim results in Saturday’s meet with the Wheeler School are pending.
