Weekly Athletics Update—Sept. 19, 2022

Welcome back to The Hill and to fall athletics at Worcester Academy. In this forum each Monday, we will recap the past week of contests as we post scores, recognize individual and team accomplishments, and try to identify the “key” contests on the calendar in the week ahead.  Additionally, we will share any information that pertains to Worcester Academy graduates performing at the next level. Nice to be with you for another exciting season!

  • Both WA varsity soccer teams have been touted as the # 1 ranked New England Prep teams in pre-season polls.
    • Boys’ soccer currently stands at 1-0-1 on the heels of a 3-0 shutout win on Saturday over St. Sebastian’s School.
    • The girls’ soccer team rebounded nicely from a 1-0 setback to open the season at Nobles & Greenough School with impressive wins over Suffield Academy (4-2 score) and Tabor Academy (2-0). Equally impressive was the outcome furnished by Evelyn Savoie in her 1st career start as she scored her 1st career goal in the road victory at Suffield Academy.

  • Varsity Football appears to have added some nice pieces to their rebuild as Coach Jeremy Bandy and his staff prepare the team for Saturday’s home opener vs. St. Paul’s (Concord, NH). Scrimmages in the early part of the fall have been both productive and encouraging as the group points towards the Evergreen opener against a formidable opponent. Game time is 4:00 p.m. this Saturday, September 24 at Morse Field.

  • Volleyball was the initial Academy team to play this season and lost a tough four set match against the Rivers School last Wednesday. Once again, the team has a nice blend of experience and talent to ensure another successful campaign on Rowe Court. The WA cheering section was in mid-season form rooting the girls’ on and that was great to see.

  • The Brush Invitational Cross Country meet at Deerfield typically kicks off the X-C season and that was the case again on Saturday as teams and runners from all over New England gathered to start their respective seasons. Ella Budzinski, WA’s top performer from a year ago and Harry Martel another letter winner from the ’21 squad led the way with noteworthy times. Ella finished 4th overall with a time of 22:13 and Harry blazed the Deerfield course in a time of 19:10 to finish 19th overall. The team returns to Western Massachusetts on Saturday to race at NMH.

  • Veteran coaches Charley Mull (JV boys’ soccer) and Alexander Gere (JV Volleyball) saw their teams in action as well. The boys’ team had a nice road win at St. Sebastian’s while the JV volleyball team dropped a 3-set match to Nobles & Greenough.

  • Worcester Academy crew is up and running this fall preparing for a limited but important race schedule and we are excited to see the great interest, enthusiasm and commitment of both kids and coaches at the lake.

AROUND THE RIM:

As the action “heats” up and we get out to the fields and courts (both here at WA and on the road) let our actions as fans and supporters resonate with class and great Sportsmanship at all times. Our coaches and student-athletes prepare and work hard and are very deserving of our support and enthusiasm. I know you will join me in honoring the work they do and validate this work by respecting all game participants, coaches and game officials.
