Weekly Athletics Update—May 23, 2022

                                    Weekly Athletics Update—May 23, 2022

Save for a final week of crew practice in preparation for a Wednesday race at the lake, we have closed the books on another athletic season at Worcester Academy. There are lots of folks to thank for their on-going work and commitment to our athletic program and it starts with our student-athletes, coaches, and our athletic training staff. In no particular order we are grateful for our “team”, which includes, Julie Berberian, Sally Card, Howie Shattuck, Rich Agbey, Dave Fields, Justin Mahan, Jim Bria and of course our friends across our campus who support Athletics—D.J. Moore, Karla Cinquanta, Drew Forsberg, Barbara Gould as well as the great workers from Sage Dining all share in the successes, we have enjoyed this year.

At our Year-End Athletic Assembly, we recognized the following outstanding performers:

The Harold W. Presson Trophy, awarded annually to the best all-around athlete of the year

Colin Hughes ’22 and Ally Murphy ‘22

The Robert J. Delahanty Prize, awarded annually to the Worcester Academy student-athlete displaying the best Sportsmanship in Athletic competition during the year

Faith Mancini ’22 and Nolan Wolfe

  • Varsity girls’ tennis concluded a remarkable season (11-2) with a final win over the Pomfret School on Wednesday in Connecticut. Congrats to Coach Snyder and the team on a great year.

  • Boys’ tennis concluded on a high note (6-7 overall) with two fine wins over Rocky Hill (7-2) and Williston-Northampton School ((5-4).

  • Varsity baseball grabbed the # 4 seed in the CMSBL play-off but fell to Dexter-Southfield in a 1st round game by a 2-0 score despite an outstanding pitching performance from junior, TJ Power. The team finished with an overall mark of 14-8.

  • Boys’ lacrosse finished with the best record in recent history (9-4) as they ran past Beaver Country Day School on Saturday to wrap up their season.

  • Girls’ lacrosse ended their season on a positive note with a win (11-9) over the Winchendon School as Lilly McCarthy ’22 scored 5 goals and Sam Bilello recorded 14 saves on the afternoon.

  • Our Crew program has made terrific strides this spring and will conclude their season on Wednesday when they race against Bancroft and Berwick at 3:30 pm at the lake.

  • Despite a 2 over par score from Junior medalist, Brendan Roy, Golf dropped their final match of the season in a 213-221 loss to Cushing Academy. Senior captain, JR Robinson went out on a high note with a sizzling round of 39 to conclude his fine career.

  • Girls’ softball got a week’s worth of hits in their finale at NMH on Wednesday as they stormed past the Hoggers in Northfield on Wednesday. Lots to be encouraged about as a young team returns next Spring to solidify this program!

  • Track & field competed in the New England D II Championships on Saturday at Governor’s. Senior Peter Papavasiliou concluded a banner year with a fine performance in Byfield.

  • JV baseball team dropped their final contest in a shoot out at NEBC against the Winchendon School and concluded their slate on Wednesday.

We salute all of our athletes as we close out the year, but in particular we thank our seniors from the Class of ’22 for their work and commitment to our school and Athletic program. Enjoy the summer and see you in the fall!
