Weekly Athletics Update—April 11, 2022

                                    Weekly Athletics Update—April 11, 2022

In typical fashion, the first full week of April was a mix of cold weather and showers that had an adverse impact on athletic activities during the week. We were able to play a handful of contests mid-week and results were encouraging!

  • Varsity baseball remains undefeated through the early portion on their non-league schedule posting impressive wins over ISL foes, Noble & Greenough (3-1) and Belmont Hill (6-4). TJ Power ’23 pitched a complete gain and struck out 4 in the win over Nobles. Huxley Holcomb hit a home run and Gabe Pitts had a multiple hit game in pacing the visiting Hilltoppers. In a bit of a slugfest at Belmont Hill, Gabe Pitts ’23 had a 3-hit game and Cam Papetti ’23, and Carson Walsh ’22 had multiple hit games as the visiting Hilltoppers rallied for a nice win on Friday. League play begins this week as Cushing and PEA will make visits to Blackburn Field on Wednesday and Saturday respectively.

  • Varsity boys’ lacrosse had an impressive week as well with a relatively easy win on Wednesday over the Williams School and a big win over Suffield team in Connecticut on Saturday by a score of 19-8. Dave Lawler ’22 poured in 8 goals and Will Masterson ’24 added five as the Hilltopper offense was in high gear. The team will host the Winchendon School on Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. contest slated for Morse Field.

  • Brendan Roy ’23 was the Medalist with a 1 over par 36 for the host Hilltoppers on Wednesday, as he led the Golf team to an opening day win over the Pomfret School. Tyler Hughes ’23 and JR Robinson ’22 were contributors along with Joe Logue ’22 and Jihyuk Bae ’26 who rounded out the scoring at Whitinsville Golf Club.

  • Varsity girls’ lacrosse split two contests during the week. On Wednesday, they traveled to RI and played a very competitive game against Portsmouth Abbey despite the loss. Friday’s home contest saw the hometown team give 1st year head coach, Crystal Coonan her initial win as they powered past the Williams School by a 13-3 count. Emmy Lacourse ’23 scored 5 goals to lead the way for WA. The team will host Beaver Country Day School on Monday at Morse Field.

  • Varsity Girls’ tennis took ISL power, St. Mark’s School to the wire in Southborough before falling by an 8-7 score on Wednesday. A strong Portsmouth Abbey team provided the opposition on Friday at Gaskill Field but the Hilltoppers took 3 out of 4 single matches and went on to an impressive 5-2 win to earn their initial win in the 2022 campaign. Balance seems to be the key ingredient for this team and Grace Gerber (playing 3rd singles) had a terrific week as she posted a mark of 3-0. The team will host the Pomfret School on Wednesday, 3:15 p.m.

  • Boy’s tennis is showing signs of rapid improvement despite an 0-3 start and this was evident on Saturday as they took Class A power, St. Paul’s School to the last match before dropping a 4-3 decision. Andrey Mukhin ’23 was impressive in an 8-3 singles match victory at the #1 spot and teamed with Diego Simosa ’25 to win the #1 doubles event. The Hilltoppers also prevailed in the #2 doubles match as Omar Saber ’24 and Nate Palumbo ’22 scored the win.

  • Softball had a nice comeback win (4-3) on Friday over Portsmouth Abbey to run their early season record to 2-1. Gabby San Inocenico ’24 had a pair of hits, Jessica Pistorino ‘23 had a timely two-run triple and Katie Foley ’24 added a run scoring double to power the Hilltoppers. On Monday, WA will host Marianapolis Prep in a 4:45 p.m. contest at New Balance.
