Weekly Athletics Update—Monday, March 7, 2022
 
BOYS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL CAPTURES NEPSAC CLASS AA CHAMPIONSHIP
 
  • Worcester Academy’s boys’ basketball team finished off a historic week with a thrilling 85-83 victory over Bradford Christian to capture the Class AA title. It was the 1st championship for the boys’ team since the 2003 season. Co-Captain Dan Becil ’22 fired in a go-ahead three-point jumper with just under 10 seconds remaining to secure the come-from behind win.  Tournament MVP TJ Power netted 23 points to lead the offense and was followed in double digit scoring by Kayvaun Mulready ’24 (19), Tre Norman ’23 (17) Jake Shapiro ’22 (11) and Dan Becil with 10. In the span of five days, the Hilltoppers defeated St. George’s 71-49 in the quarterfinals, Cushing Academy, 62-58 in the semi-finals and finally BCA before a packed house on Sunday afternoon. Congratulations to our team and to our coaches on this terrific accomplishment!

  • A strong contingent of WA swimmers who qualified for the New England Championships competed on Saturday in the Division II Championships at the Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction, Vt. Personal Best Times (PBT’s) were the order of the day as the rigorous training and countless hours in the pool paid off in dividends for our swimmers. In the individual races, Alex Arpin ’22 and Donovan Sappet ’24 took home 6th place finishes in the 50 free and 100 free (Alex) as well as in the 100 Breaststroke (Donovan).  Additionally, the Medley Relay team (Donovan Sappet, Miles Gao, Hung Truong, and Alex Arpin) grabbed a 4th place finish in the 200 and a 6thplace finish in the 400 Free Relay. Olivia Bull ’23, grabbed a 13th place finish in the 200 free for the girls’ and the 400 Free Relay team (Olivia Bull, Lily Burke, Grace Qiu, and Brianna Penterson) impressed with an 8th place finish. Congratulations to our team on a strong performance!

  • Girls’ varsity basketball drew the 6th seed and traveled to # 3 seed Noble & Greenough School on Wednesday for quarter-final action in the Class AA Tournament. Despite 19 points from Cameron Rust ’23, the Hilltoppers fell by a 54-42 margin and closed out their season with a record of 14-9. Another post-season invitation will serve the team well as they look out to next year!
