Weekly Athletics Update—Sept. 27, 2021

Congratulations to Coach Beth Ryder and her varsity volleyball team who came back from a
2-game deficit and defeated Suffield Academy in 5 sets on Saturday afternoon. It was a determined effort throughout and a breakthrough of sorts for the team who provided Coach Ryder with a memorable 1stWorcester Academy victory. The front end of the 2021 season has been challenging as the team competed hard but fell to a strong Deerfield squad earlier in the week. The team will travel to Wilbraham & Monson Academy on Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. match.
  • Our 2021 varsity field hockey roster has only 7 returning players so the level of experience is limited in scope. Their ability to come together as a group is anything but limited as they demonstrated so well on Saturday afternoon at Dexter-Southfield School. Despite coming away with a 5-3 loss, the team showed tremendous resilience and competitiveness in pushing Dexter to the limit on a sun-drenched afternoon in Brookline. Three different WA scorers contributed as Gina Richard, Emily Ferguson, and Maribeth FitzGerald kept the Hilltoppers close throughout. Another trip on the Mass Pike East is scheduled for Wednesday as the team travels to take on Beaver Country Day School at 4:00 p.m.

  • Boys’ varsity soccer is living up to their pre-season billing rolling past Choate in Wallingford on Wednesday (3-0) and then by NMH on Sunday afternoon (4-1) in Albany. Sunday’s event was an opportune time for the Hilltoppers to shine as the contest was a College Showcase, played before a hundred college coaches. TJ Liquori scored two goals and Colin Hughes registered two assists in Wednesday’s win over Choate. St. Paul’s will travel to WA on Wednesday afternoon for a 3:15 pm contest at New Balance Field.

  • Girls’ varsity soccer dropped a thrilling 2-1 contest on Wednesday afternoon at New Balance to defending Class A champion, BB&N. It was an even match throughout and only decided in the final minute as the visitors from Cambridge kicked home the game winner. A one goal half time lead quickly expanded in the 2nd stanza and the Hilltoppers raced home with a nice Class A victory. Phillips Andover travels to Morse Field on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. contest.

  • JV boys’ soccer traveled to Boston on Wednesday dropping a 3-0 contest to the Fessenden School and will host St. Paul’s School (upper field New Balance) Wednesday afternoon at 3:15 p.m.

  • JV volleyball split a pair of contests during the week, pushing past Deerfield on Wednesday before dropping a 2-1 match to Suffield Academy on Saturday. The team travels to Wilbraham & Monson on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. match.

  • JV girls’ soccer has been out of the loop for 18 months and made their return in good fashion with a solid performance against BB&N on Wednesday. Gauri Srivatsa scored the lone WA goal in a tightly contested defensive match. The Miss Porters’ School will provide the Oskee-Weekend competition on Saturday.

  • Boys’ cross country competed against the host school, Williston along with NMH and Suffield on a picture-perfect fall afternoon in Western Massachusetts. Ash Mohaghegh was the 1st WA runner home (18th place overall), followed closely by captain Aiden Warner. The team will use the week ahead to prepare for Saturday’s home meet at the Emmons Cross Country Course at the New Balance Field.

  • Sophomore Ella Budzinski was impressive as she captured 2nd place overall in the quad meet at Williston on Saturday. Ellianna Gelardi was impressive with an 18th place overall as was Renee Coutinho who placed 24th in the crowded field.

  • Head coach, Jeremy Bandy led an undermanned but determined group of football players to compete against the Dexter School on Saturday evening under the lights in Brookline. Although eventually falling 37-6, the team competed and kept things close through the end of three quarters. Ultimately, the size and athleticism of Dexter wore down the Hilltoppers who will regroup and prepare for a Homecoming contest with Albany Academy on Saturday. Game time is 3:30 p.m. at Gaskill Field.
