Weekly Athletics Update—May 4, 2021

The Big Blue from Andover provided the weekend opposition and proved to be a worthy foe. Williston-Northampton is on tap for this week with games once again scheduled for Friday, 5/7 and Saturday, 5/8.

WA parents, guardians, and siblings along with faculty, staff, and students may attend home contests but we will finish the spring season with only WA athletes, coaches, and team personnel traveling to road contests.

  • WA softball had an incredible walk-off 8-7 win on Friday afternoon on a blustery, cold day at New Balance Field. It was the 1st win over Andover in “years” and a great way to start the weekend. Down 7-2 in the bottom of the 7th inning, the Hilltoppers strung together a series of hits and took advantage of some aggressive base running to push the winning run across the dish and igniting a fitting celebration from the WA faithful. The return engagement on Saturday saw Big Blue bounce back with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Hilltoppers.

  • Varsity golf traveled to Andover on Saturday afternoon and enjoyed a competitive 18-hole match before dropping their 1st match of the spring. WA was led by Brendan Roy (76) and JR Robinson (78).
  • Varsity baseball “bats” remained quiet save for a middle-inning flurry in the 1st game of a twin bill on Saturday and lost the weekend series to Andover. WA hurlers continue their consistent work and the young Hilltoppers will find the win column as the bats heat up over the final two weekends. WA will now host Williston here on Friday afternoon (4:45 p.m. start at Gaskill) and then travel to WNH on Saturday for a doubleheader (2:00 p.m. start).

  • Both our boys’ and girls’ tennis teams struggled in their opening match against a strong, polished Andover varsity but both teams rebounded nicely on Saturday in capturing competitive matches against the Andover B teams. On the girls’ side WA managed to win 3 out of 4 singles matches and 2 out of 3 doubles to earn a satisfying win at Andover.

  • JV Baseball got their offense in gear and rolled past the Winchendon School 9-4 at New Balance Field on Saturday afternoon. The team will travel to Andover on Friday afternoon (May 7) in a rescheduled contest from this past weekend. Game time is 4:45 p.m.

  • Andover’s depth and overall play proved too much for the girls' varsity lacrosse team on Friday afternoon as the visiting Hilltoppers dropped a decision. Boys’ lacrosse traveled to Andover as well on Saturday, hung around for an 11-5 halftime deficit then eventually fell by a 21-10 account. Both squads will look to rebound this weekend as the girls’ host WNH on Friday (5:00 pm) and the boys’ travel west on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
