Weekly Athletics Update—April 26, 2021
As we hit the halfway point to our spring season our teams were the beneficiaries of a nice weather pattern that brought sunshine and some milder temperatures to the region. A Saturday afternoon filled with home contests at Gaskill Field (baseball, track & field and girls’ tennis), Morse Field (girls’ lacrosse) and New Balance (softball) was a welcome sight and perhaps a harbinger of good things to come for all. As we approach our final three weekends of competition, we are pleased to be able to welcome our parents and siblings back to in-person attendance (along with WA faculty, students and staff) and we know our student-athletes and coaches are grateful for your continued support.
- The varsity baseball team (4-2 on the season) swept their two game weekend series against Cushing and TJ Powers ’23 was masterful in hurling a no hitter in the Saturday contest. TJ also excelled at the plate with a multiple hit performance to lead the Hilltoppers to victory.
- Despite a strong effort and a spirited comeback, the boys’ lacrosse team dropped a 12-8 decision to Cushing on Friday afternoon at Morse Field. Senior Owen Lockwood controlled the all-important face off area and Greg Canning ’24 was impressive in a 7 goal scoring performance.
- Coach Kevin Snyder’s girls’ tennis team continues to impress as they raced past Cushing in stellar fashion on Saturday.
- Girls’ lacrosse ran into a strong Cushing squad and dropped a pair of weekend contests. Saturday’s return engagement saw the youthful WA team jump out to an early lead but the overall strength and experience of the CA team proved to be insurmountable.
- Softball returned to action and lost a pair of games to Cushing but head coach Wayne Bolden remains excited with a talented group of young players already making their presence felt on the varsity level.
| - Members of our track & field program demonstrated great camaraderie and enthusiasm throughout Saturday’s well executed meet against a relatively small but competitive Cushing squad. The bevy of activity surrounding multiple events (running and throwing) was fun to see and WA athletes produced some impressive performances. The boys’ team prevailed 71-42 as Jorden Afonso (victory in 110m high hurdles, 300m hurdles and the long jump) and Jack Adiletta (victory in 100m dash, triple jump and a 2nd in the 800m) led the way. The girls’ prevailed by a similarly impressive 78-25 count as Kiely Floyd placed 1st in the discus, 2nd in the shot and javelin and also ran a leg in the 4 X 100 relay. Congrats to all!
- Our golf team returned to action Saturday afternoon as they traveled to the Gardner Municipal Golf Course to take on the Penguins. After a scheduled Wednesday home match was canceled due to weather concerns the “road” trip did not seem to faze the Hilltoppers who prevailed by a 228-243 score. Tyler Hughes ’24 was Low Medalist on the day with a solid round of 42.
- Boys’ tennis was the lone WA team to travel to Ashburnham on Saturday and came away with a 3-3 tie in a very competitive match. All WA players who traveled were able to find their way into the win column.
