                                                    Weekly Athletics Update

  • The Class A Wrestling Tournament took place over this past weekend at the Hyde School in Bath, Maine and as always this event sets the alarm for a quick finish to the winter season. With but a month remaining to this “mild” winter season, our teams and athletes are gearing up for what promises to be an exciting conclusion to a successful season to date. Congratulations to junior, Mike Berberian who took a 5th place at the Class A event as the top WA wrestler.

  • Freshman basketball went 2-1 on the week with a home and away tilt against the Cushing Penguins (a tough road loss at Auburn High School began the week). Three Hilltoppers scored in double figures in Wednesday’s away contest and point guard Wes Larson led the way in Saturday’s home victory.
  • The flu has hit our boys hockey team but they have worked their way through some external challenges and continue to play solid hockey. Cushing Academy eventually wore down the maroon and white in Monday’s home contest, the 1st of four games during the week (3 at the WIC). League foe, the Pingree School provided the opposition on Wednesday and solid goaltending and timely scoring paved the way for a shutout victory. The team battled NMH on even terms on Friday eve before falling in Northfield. A deep, talented Milton Academy team had their hands full with the home town team for much of the contest on Saturday afternoon before pulling away with a 4-2 win. Jack Byrne ’21 was outstanding in the nets and kept WA in the game with some terrific stops.

  • Boys’ varsity basketball squeezed by Suffield Academy with a 55-49 count on Wednesday then turned up the volume on the offensive end on Friday evening  and tacked up 91 points in a 6-point loss to Blair Academy. Quest Harris’ ’20 and Michael Rabinovitch ’20 led the scoring parade for the Hilltoppers who have a busy slate ahead this week with three contests, including a Sunday 2:00 pm matinee with prep power, Brewster Academy here on Rowe Court.

  • Adara Groman ’20 led four Hilltoppers in double figures as the girls varsity hoops team took a road contest at the Pomfret School on Wednesday in their lone contest on the week. The team returns to action on Saturday when they travel to NMH for a 3:00 pm contest.

  • JV boys’ basketball broke into the win column on Wednesday with a victory over the Hillside School and will look for back to back wins on Wednesday afternoon when they host the Groton School at 3:30 pm.

  • Girl’s hockey played two road contests and came away with a split as they fell to the Brooks School by a 3-2 count on Wednesday before battling back for a 2-0 win in Main over the Kents Hill School. Melissa Macri ’20 registered both goals in Saturday’s win and also contributed a goal in Wednesday’s setback.

  • Varsity 2 was no match for the Middlesex School on Friday eve in Concord, but bounced back on Saturday morning and hung on for a 49-43 win over Marianapolis Prep. Johhny Davis ’20 scored 16 points and Joe Gow ’20 dropped in 15 as the Hilltoppers registered their 2nd win of the year.

  • Varsity Swim team traveled to the Blue Hills School on Saturday for a dual meet against Thayer Academy and lost both, 88-81 on the girls’ side and 79-58 on the boys’ side. The team will host Williston on Wednesday afternoon here in the Daniels gym pool at 3:30 pm.
