                                                Weekly Athletic Update

The long winter break is behind us and most of our teams have returned to competitive action.  All of our teams have reestablished their training routine for the home stretch and there will be a slew of games as we head towards Championship Weekend (March 7-8).

  • Boys’ varsity basketball returned from a 2-week layoff returning to action on Wednesday with a road contest at AA rival, the Winchendon School. The home team rallied from a 14-point deficit and handed the Hilltoppers their lone AA conference loss with an 80-76 OT win. WA hopes to build on the offensive balance established in this game (5 players scored in double digits). In one of the most exciting contests played on Rowe Court in recent memory junior Jhamyl Fricas drilled a 3 pointer on a last second out of bounds play to edge AAA power, New Hampton by an 88-87 count. Fricas continues his fine play on the offensive end with a 3rd consecutive team leading point output. WA travels to AA rival Proctor Academy on Wednesday.

  • Boys’ varsity hockey has surged over the last three weeks winning 4 consecutive outings (4 out of last 5) as their offense seems to be clicking. Wins over BB&N, Brewster Academy and Sunday’s impressive road win at Vermont Academy have the Hilltoppers flying as the New Year begins. Atticus Roop ’22 and Mike Gethings ’20 both scored two goals in Saturday’s home win over Brewster and net minder Jack Byrne ’21 registered 30 saves to propel the Hilltoppers to victory. The team hosts Williston on Wednesday at the WIC with a 6:00 p.m. game time.
  • Girls’ Ice hockey emerged from an impressive showing in the Cushing Watkins Tournament over the holidays with a solid week of hockey that included a home win over NMH and a road conquest of the Middlesex School on Saturday. In Wednesday’s win over NMH senior forwards Melissa Macri and Megan Buxton both scored two goals to power the host Hilltoppers over NMH. Phillips Exeter travels to Worcester on Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. showdown at the WIC.

  • Girls’ varsity basketball raced out to a commanding half time lead and eased past Deerfield on Saturday afternoon here on Rowe Court. Adara Groman ’20 led the scoring parade as the Hilltoppers speed and depth proved too much for Deerfield to handle. A rematch with the Rivers School (early season contest went the Hilltoppers way) is on tap for Monday eve, 5:00 p.m. and will be followed by a home game on Wednesday with Loomis and finally a road trip to St. Andrew’s on Saturday.

  • The wrestling team is picking up wins in a couple of positions—nice work by Mike Berberian ’21 and Noel Gomez ’23 who scored victories in Saturday’s tri-meet at PEA.

  • Varsity 2 hoops captured their initial win of the season as they traveled to Cheshire Academy on Saturday. Seniors’ Joe Gow and Frank Polito each scored 16 points to lead the visiting Hilltoppers.

  • Varsity ski team also competed at Mt. Wachusett on Friday eve and as both teams look to find their stride, senior Gabby Gavala and junior Olivia Cyr continue to lead the team.

  • Junior hockey team continues their fine play in the NESC Sunday league as they skated past Acton-Boxboro on Sunday.

Around the Rim:

We are all deeply saddened by the loss of athletic trainer, Paul Vaillancourt. It was a beautiful tribute to the work Paul did here and the relationships he nurtured to see the outpouring of love and support for his family at his wake last weekend.  We will remember Paul with fondness!
