Weekly Athletics Update

The return from the Thanksgiving holiday was a bit unsettling as Winter delivered an early salvo of snow and inclement weather causing the cancellation of school activities last Monday and Tuesday.  Although practices were impacted our teams seemed poised and ready to play as league games began in earnest.
  • Girls’ ice hockey added to their frequent travel miles (on the heels of an early season weekend trip to Pennsylvania) as they traveled to Tilton, NH for a Wednesday afternoon tilt. Solid goal tending and opportune scoring paved the way for a 3-0 road win and gave the team nice momentum heading into their Saturday home opener against Portsmouth Abbey School. The red light registered six times as the home town team scored an impressive 6-3 win over their neighbors from the Ocean State. The team is back on the road this Wednesday as it travels to Dover, NH to take on the Berwick School.

  • Girls’ basketball made an early season statement on the quality of their returning Class AA championship group pushing past the Rivers School in Weston on Friday evening. PG sharpshooter, Kyla Jones led the scoring parade for the Hilltoppers in the 53-32 victory. Phillips Andover will provide the opposition on Wednesday’s home opener.

  • Boys’ AA basketball returned home after two opening season Showcase events (1-1) and used the 3-point marksmanship from DaSonte Bowen ’22 to push past league foe Brimmer & May by a 71-56 count. The Hilltoppers were able to make a 2nd half run to provide separation from Brimmer & May pushing their AA record to 2-0. On Sunday the team played the Loomis-Chaffee School in Rhode Island and dropped a heartbreaking, well played 76-75 decision to L-C. The game came down to the final possession and when Dayton-bound RJ Blakney’s 3-pointer swished through, it sealed the deal for the Nutmeg quintet.

  • Boys’ ice hockey opened their schedule against a rugged, talented Holderness School team and came out on the short end of a 4-1 count. Holderness jumped out with 2 early scores and kept the Hilltoppers at bay for the remaining 2 periods. The boys’ will look for their 1st 2019-2020 win on Wednesday, hosting St. Mark’s School at 4:00 pm.

  • Congratulations to 1st year Junior Varsity coach, Brendan Herlihy as the young Hilltoppers are out of the gate with a roar posting a 2-0 road win at Pomfret on Saturday and a 7-0 whitewash of the Acton-Boxboro JV team on Sunday morning.

  • Good to have head coach Steve Scott back on the sidelines as well, directing the fortunes of our boys’ JV basketball team. The squad played hard throughout a tough 32-29 home loss against the Rivers School on Saturday afternoon.

  • Jay Leonard, fresh off a stellar 1st year as the HC of the JV girls’ basketball team saw his team use multiple combinations in sliding past the Eagle Hill School. Ally Gray ’23 led the scoring parade on the afternoon but was ably assisted by a trio of talented WA players.

  • Our Wrestling team numbers are real low and our 1st tri-meet of the season saw Mike Berberian ’21 and co-captain Sam Scott ’20 splitting their two matches. There are still opportunities to join the team, so if interested please stop by the wrestling room any day after 4:00 pm and introduce yourself to Coach Parker.

  • On the final note for the 1st full week of game activity our freshman basketball team dropped a decision to NMH on Saturday afternoon in Northfield.
