Varsity Club, Championships, and Recognition

Weekly Athletic Update, 5/8/18

The games are coming at a furious pace as spring teams head down the home stretch. Despite a rather wet and dreary stretch, teams have managed to get in the majority of contests and with but two full calendar weeks remaining, we are optimistic that conditions will improve.
  • Varsity baseball continues to roll as the week started off in impressive fashion on Monday with a 9-6 win over two-time defending ISL champions, St. Sebastian’s. Sean McCarthy ’19 and Matt Shaw ’20 provided the offensive output pushing the home team into the victory column. League wins on the road over NMH and at home against Deerfield (4-3) have the team positioned for a nice finish. Excellent pitching (Senior Tim O’Connor and sophomore Kyle Rizy) ruled the day as the Hilltoppers squeezed past Deerfield in the 2019 “Catching Cancer” game. Many thanks to all who contributed to the day in raising awareness and dollars to support the 15-40 Connection and their 3 Step Early Detect Program.
  • Stella Gray ’21 led the way for our Girls’ Track and Field team as they posted an impressive 79-59 win over the host Westminster School. Stella won the 100 hurdles, the 300 hurdles and the high jump while senior distance runner Coco Arcand captured both the 1500m and 3000m races. Alexis Cagan ’20 played a pivotal role as well winning the 100m dash, finishing 2nd in the Javelin and running in both the 4 X 100 and the 4 X 400 relays, events won by the Hilltoppers. Despite another impressive performance from senior Zukudu Igwenagu who performed and scored in four separate events, the boys were overwhelmed by their counterparts from Westminster. Senior Nick Ng continued his fine season as well winning both Hurdles events and running on our 4 X 4100m relay team. Senior Josh Isakson recorded a PR and grabbed a 2nd in the Discus.
  • Coach Al Vaudreuil recorded his 1st win as the head coach of the Golf team with a win over the Winchendon School on Monday. Captain Julian Kates has been the medalist for the Hilltoppers in all but one contest to date.
  • Boys’ tennis enjoyed a good week as they defeated Bancroft (5-0) and Portsmouth Abbey (6-3).
  • Girls’ tennis captured their 3rd consecutive match with a shutout win over Marianapolis (7-0) then faltered in matches against NMH (5-0) and a very strong St. George’s School by a similar 5-0 count.
  • Our girls’ lacrosse team (7 consecutive wins) is on a great run as they captured three additional contests last week. Included in this streak was an impressive come from behind win (14-12) at Portsmouth Abbey as freshman Claire McShea scored the go ahead goal with 3:00 minutes to go. Solid wins over LCA and BCDS has positioned the team nicely for a finish that could catapult them into the Class B NEPSAC Tournament.vBoys’ lacrosse earned some frequent “flier” miles last week travelling to both Lawrence Academy and St. Paul’s School and seemed to thrive a bit more on the friendly confines of Morse Field. In their lone win of the week over Beaver Country Day School (11-6), Cole Keeler ’21 earned the offensive star of the day. The team will look to get back on track on Monday, hosting Wilbraham & Monson School at Morse Field at 5:00 pm.
  • Softball took to the road as well last week dropping contests at Cheshire and Andover despite a sold day at the plate for Liv Valery ’19 (multiple hit afternoon at New Balance). The team travels to Pomfret on Wednesday for a 3:00 pm contest.
  • Our Crew team took to the waters on both Wednesday and Sunday despite the cold conditions and happy to report that our Boys’ 1st boat won their 1st race of the year on Sunday. While times and performances and overall improvement can be measured in quantifiable times, getting that W is always a momentum boost to the spirit and psyche of an athlete. Typically, WA has been racing a 1st, 2nd and 3rd boat on both the girls’ and boys’ side and a number of boats have slipped into that 2nd finishing slot, including a near miss 2nd place finish by our girls’ 3rd boat. More races to come and hopefully some warmer conditions to boot!
