WORCESTER, Mass. (April 5, 2019) — Worcester Academy today announced its annual Reunion 5K & Fun Run will be held in memory of Timothy S. “Tim” Delehaunty ’86, a WA alumnus and distinguished independent school leader who passed away last year. The race will be held May 4 at 11 a.m.
“Tim Delehaunty made an impact on the people around him through his intelligence, character, and positive spirit,” said Head of School Ron Cino. “We miss him, and I am glad that we can honor him through running, something about which he was passionate and in which he found great joy.”
Tim, who was beloved head of school at the Tower School in Marblehead, MA, died Nov. 14 on his 50th birthday. He was recognized by many for his vision, his leadership, and his profound sense of community. A graduate of the College of the Holy Cross and Middlebury College, he was a wonderful short story writer. At Worcester Academy, he was remembered more recently for having been a loyal supporter and friend of WA, and for his service on Worcester Academy’s Board of Visitors.
According to his mother, former Worcester Academy Board of Trustees member Kathy Delehaunty, Tim was a devoted athlete, sports fan, and runner who completed 10 marathons over the years.
“It’s fitting that we honor him for one of his many passions in life,” said Mrs. Delehaunty. She said she hoped many of his former co-workers and WA and Holy Cross classmates would join her, Tim’s family, and the Worcester Academy community in honoring Tim’s memory by participating in the Reunion 5K & Fun Run on May 4.
“I think Tim would love this,” said Mrs. Delehaunty. “He ran these Worcester hills as a student, both at Worcester Academy and Holy Cross. He had a wonderful, contagious smile, and I believe he’ll be smiling down on us on race day.”
Tim is survived by his wife of 23 years, Theresa; his two children, Shea and Ian; his sister, Elisabeth ’89; and his parents, Jim and Kathy.
REUNION 5K & FUN RUN
The Reunion 5K & Fun Run starts at 11 a.m., May 4, on the Quad on Worcester Academy’s historic 81 Providence Street campus. From there, the race continues up Providence Street to Morse and Gaskill fields before looping back to main campus for the finish. Medals and prizeswill be given in multiple categories, for both adults and children. A professional timer will certify official race results.
According to Alumni House organizers, a free breakfast will precede the race, and a barbecue lunch will follow.
“As the race grows each year, we look forward to hosting this fun event for alumni and families who make their way to campus for Reunion,” said Alicia Figueiredo, manager of alumni programs and events. “This year, there is the added incentive of honoring a fellow Hilltopper and friend, whose presence in our lives and on campus is dearly missed.”
