Greetings from the Hilltop! The 4th of July festivities have come and gone and our Sports camps are in full swing as we head towards the mid-point of summer vacation. Several Worcester Academy teams and coaches continue their off-season workout programs here on campus preparing for the year ahead. Showcase events in all sports, summer camps across the country and individual College’s and University’s hosting prospect camps have many of our returning athletes and families on the go! There really is no longer an off-season as such, but we encourage you all to step back a bit, find some down time and be certain to relax and enjoy your families and friends prior to a return to WA in late-August.
Around the Rim:
Mr. Snyder does an incredible job with our WA Athletic Instagram page – even during the summer months – highlighting notable accomplishments and significant events concerning WA athletes – past and present – so we encourage you to stay connected by checking in from time to time.
After an absence of several years, we will once again move forward and recognize two Rowe Scholars each year. The award is named in honor of Donald “Dee” Rowe ’47, a legendary Worcester icon, coach, trustee emeritus, and a 2017 Basketball Hall of Fame, John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement recipient.
For over twenty years the Worcester Academy Rowe Scholarship Golf Classic Tournament supported the Rowe Family Scholarship Fund which provided scholarships to students of outstanding character who, in addition to their participation in athletics, exhibited strong leadership in both school and community. Since its inception in 1998 the Rowe Scholarship Fund has awarded more than 60 deserving students.
Congratulations to our Rowe Scholar Award winners, Jason “JJ” Stien ’23 and Emma Abysalh ’23. It is with great pleasure that we honor them as our 2023 Rowe Scholars and wish them continued success in their remaining time here at Worcester Academy.
Congratulations to Matt Shaw ’20 who was the #13 selection of the Chicago Cubs in the 1st round of the MLB draft on Sunday. Matt joins fellow WA Alum, Aliyah Boston ’19 who was the top pick overall in the WNBA draft and currently a 1st year WNBA All-Star with the Indiana Fever.
Enjoy the remaining weeks of the summer. All the best! - Ed Reilly
