                                                            Weekly Athletics Update—Jan. 24, 2022

In a shortened holiday week, Worcester Academy teams pressed on with some solid performances highlighted by a dominant exhibition by our 3rds Basketball team. In their 1st home contest of the season, the team demonstrated tremendous balance, unselfish play and a relentless defense that kept visiting Auburn High unsettled throughout the contest. Nine players scored for the host Hilltoppers who ran their record to 3-1.

  • In an equally uplifting performance, our Middle School swim team prevailed by the slimmest of margins (44-42) in their 1st meet of the year on Tuesday against Moses Brown. There was tremendous energy, lots of fine performances and plenty to build on as the team looks ahead to this week’s meet.

  • Rowe Court was packed on Wednesday as Jamie Sullivan’s team welcomed the top team in AA, Wilbraham & Monson. The visitors from Western Mass didn’t disappoint as they led throughout and posted a convincing 81-65 win over the Hilltoppers. Junior backcourt teammates, Tre Norman (19) and Kayvaun Mulready (18) paced the Hilltoppers. Andover provided the opposition on Friday eve as the host Hilltoppers bounced back with a 71-62 victory pushing their overall record to 10-4.

  • Varsity 2 basketball grabbed a pair of road wins as Krish Pahari ’22 and JR Robinson ’22 tossed in 12 points each to lead the team past Wilbraham on Friday eve. Jimmy Railsback (13) provided the heroics on Saturday at Cushing with a buzzer beating lay in that propelled the Hilltoppers to a 33-31 victory.

  • Varsity girls ice hockey split two games dropping a 1-0 contest at St. George’s on Wednesday and then rebounding nicely with a 4-0 shut out win at the Pomfret School on Saturday

  • Girls Varsity basketball also split two games as they upended Nobles at home on Saturday, 49-38. Junior guard, Oluchi Okananwa led a WA defensive effort that kept Nobles out of rhythm for much of the contest. Several late steals in the 2nd half led to run outs for scores for the host Hilltoppers. Tabor Academy upended the Hilltoppers on Wednesday in Marion, securing their spot at the top of the AA standings.

  • Boys’ ice hockey played a strong game on Saturday afternoon securing a nice Holt Conference victory over a rugged NYA team. The 4-3 win, off a late goal avenged a Wednesday road loss (4-2) at the Pomfret School. The Hilltoppers finished the week on a strong note as it traveled up I-95 on Sunday morning for another Holt Conference game. The two-way performance was evident throughout as the Hilltoppers skated past Hebron Academy by a 6-0 count. Ben Plottner recorded the shutout and Jameson Alicandro scored a pair of goals in the win.

  • The JV ice hockey team continued their outstanding season to date, earning a 2-2 road tie at Tabor and then holding off host Thayer Academy on Saturday afternoon in Braintree. The 3-2 win over Thayer was punctuated by a game winner off the stick of Jeff Randazza. Ike Dutton and Benett Gelardi also scored for the Hilltoppers.

  • In their only contest of the week our girls JV basketball team competed hard but fell to Nobles by a 51-44 count despite 12 points apiece from Kortnie Adams and Tea Richardson.

  • The Applewild team’s speed and size were too much for the Middle School basketball team who dropped a close contest on Thursday in the old gym.

  • In the 2nd week of the CMSL the WA girls’ and boys’ teams find themselves in the middle of the pack. In biting cold conditions this past Friday, our team ventured to the mountain to compete. Kayzie Salmon ’24 and Mia Harris ’25 led the way on the girls’ side and Harry Martel ’25 and Ed Jiao ’22 were the two top WA racers. Races take place every Friday afternoon at Mount Wachusett.
