                                                Weekly Athletics Update—Dec. 20, 2021
Worcester Academy teams closed out the 1st portion of the 2021-2022 winter schedule with a series of games and tournaments featuring our men’s and women’s ice hockey and basketball teams.
  • The week started off in grand fashion as the WA swim team pushed past the Pingree School on Wednesday afternoon.  The girls’ meet proved to be the most challenging on this day – and ultimately a good result - as the undermanned boys’ team was no match for the Hilltoppers.
  • Our boys’ junior varsity ice hockey team enters the break with a 3-0 record, savoring their opportunity to play at the Boston Bruins practice facility, Warrior Ice Arena in Brighton on Wednesday eve. The convincing 7-0 win over Beaver Country Day School saw the young Hilltoppers excelling on all fronts.

  • Boys’ varsity hockey enjoyed a productive weekend in the prestigious Barber Holiday Tournament played at the Middlesex School and St. Mark’s. Connor Gethings ’22 scored 2 goals and Ben Plotner ’23 had 24 saves in the tourney opener as the Hilltoppers avenged an early season set back to Middlesex with a 6-3 victory. In a tough 5-4 setback to the Hill School, Jason Flaherty ’23 had a 4-assist game and set the stage for his game winner in the consolation finals against the Canterbury School. Tyson Scanlon ’23 had a pair of goals including the tying goal inside of two minutes and Ben Plotner once again was brilliant in goal setting aside 32 shots as the Hilltoppers prevailed by a 3-2 count.

  • Our girls’ ice hockey team played in the Watkins Tournament at Cushing over the weekend and played against some of the top teams in the region. The lone win on the weekend came in the final contest against the Winchendon School as the Hilltoppers emerged with a 5-3 win. Emmy Lacourse ’23 was named to the All-Tournament team and was outstanding in the win over Winchendon with 25 saves to propel WA.
  • Boys’ Varsity basketball ran their AA record to 5-1 with a home victory over Lawrence Academy (66-52) and a win in the Basketball Tournament in Springfield over the Darrow School on Saturday afternoon. The lone AA setback came against Bradford Christian Academy on Friday (the Hilltoppers had previously defeated BCA in the Blackburn finals) as BCA was able to turn the tables on WA. Tre Norman ’23 and Dan Becil ’22 led the offense in the win over Lawrence and junior Kayvaun Mulready hit a career high 6-3-pointers to lead the way against the Darrow School (71-61). It was the 1st meeting ever between the two schools.
  • Steve Scott’s Varsity 2 basketball team ended the December portion of their schedule in good fashion pushing past Wilbraham & Monson by a 57-36 count. Jimmy Railsback ’22 (11) and Brendan Roy ’23 (10) were the lone double-digit scorers for the hometown team.
  • Junior Alexandra Eldredge hit 6 3-pointers in the opening round win over the Dexter School including one at the buzzer to secure the lone win on the weekend for the Hilltoppers in the Nobles Holiday Tournament. Eldredge rang up 21 points on the afternoon as the Hilltoppers beat Dexter for the 2nd time in the young season. Despite a good 2nd half comeback against Bradford Christian School, WA came up on the short end of their 2nd game and fell in their last tournament appearance to a talented Brooks School on Sunday.
