Weekly Athletics Update—Dec. 13, 2021
The initial piece of our Winter season will end after this weekend’s contests and many of our teams will be involved in holiday tournaments. The eagerly awaited Christmas holiday will give everyone a chance to relax and catch up with family and friends. The week in review saw some tremendous individual accomplishments and more importantly impressive team victories as December rolls on.
- Swim started their home season with a resounding performance on Wednesday racing past Wilbraham & Monson by a 56-36 count on the girls’ side and a 46-44 score on the boys’. Alex Arpin (50/100 yd. freestyle) and Donovan Sappet (500 free/100 back) were multiple winners for the boys’ and Makenna Eisenstock grabbed a 1st in the 100 back and teamed with Ellianna Gelardi, Grace Qui and Anatstasia Novikova to win the 200 Medley Relay. Olivia Bull (500 free), Brianna Penterson (200 IM) Ellianna Gelardi (50 free) and Grace Qui (100 fly) all registered impressive individual wins.
- Girls’ ice hockey is off to a great start (4-0) with a 4-3 OT win on Wednesday over Berwick Academy and a 3-0 shutout win over NYA on Sunday. Emily Long had 2 goals and an assist during the week including the game winner in OT against Berwick. Miranda DeAntunano ’22 had 20 saves in the win for WA.
- Atticus Roop ’22 had a hat trick on Saturday as the boys’ pushed past Kents Hill on Saturday, 8-3. St. Mark’s broke open a close game in the final period and skated to a 7-3 win over the host Hilltoppers on Wednesday. WA closed out the weekend, suffering their 1st Holt Conference defeat, 3-2 against Hebron Academy. The team plays next weekend in the Barber Tournament at the St. Mark’s arena.
- Girls’ basketball had a full slate of activity playing 4 games (including a make-up at Rivers) in the span of 7 days. The team split the four contests with wins over Phillips Andover (Alesandra Eldredge with a team high 18 points) and Marianapolis and losses at the hands of the Rivers School and Proctor Academy. Oluchi Okananwa ’24 was named to the All-Tournament team in the Blackburn Tournament and received ample support from Katie Adiletta, Lola Lesmond, Abbie MacDonald and Cameron Rust during the weekend event.
- Boys’ varsity basketball had a full complement of healthy bodies for the 1st time all season and played their best basketball of the year pushing past Tilton on the road on Wednesday and then securing the Blackburn Tournament Championship with inspiring wins over Proctor Academy and Bradford Christian School. Balance has been the key to date, evidenced by consecutive games with four players in double figures. Senior Dan Becil (29 points/6 three-pointers) joined fellow juniors Tre Norman and Kayvaun Mulready on the All-Tournament team and TJ Power took away the Most Valuable Player award in leading the Hilltoppers to victory.
- JV girls’ basketball dropped their 1st game on Wednesday as they fell behind NMH early and never quite made a surge to get back into the mix. Kortnie Adams ’25 tossed in 15 points for the hometown team.
- The Varsity 2 Basketball team will look to rebound on Wednesday when they host Wilbraham & Monson Academy on Rowe Court at 3:30 pm. The Winchendon V2 team imposed their will in impressive fashion and handed the WA team their 1st loss to even their slate at 1-1. Krish Pahari ’22 led the scoring parade with 9 points.
- Ten players hit the scoring column for the 3rds basketball team who jumped out to a quick lead at Williston and never looked back in an impressive 41-22 road win.
- JV Ice hockey team improved to 2-0 with an outstanding 3-0 win at Cushing on Saturday afternoon. Braden Clifford ’23 was solid in the net and the WA defense up to the task in securing a confidence-building early season win. The team travels to the Warrior Arena (practice home of the Boston Bruins) for a Wednesday contest against Beaver Country Day School.

Around the Rim:
Games are on-going and our teams and coaches are really pleased when WA spectators come out to show support. The level of sportsmanship and courtesy demonstrated to date have been good and we thank everyone involved for making the effort to cheer positively for our kids. While we are hoping for a downturn with the Virus and the prospect of attending indoor athletic events without masks, for now, please wear your masks when attending WA Athletic events here on campus, at the Worcester Ice Center or out at the New England Sports Center. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation and wish everyone a safe, happy and healthy holiday season.
