Worcester Academy 182nd Commencement Exercises


Worcester Academy will hold its 182st Commencement Exercises on Friday, June 3, at 11 a.m., with 162 graduating.  The graduation ceremony will be held outside on the historic Quad on the Academy’s main campus at 81 Providence Street. (In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held inside Daniels Gymnasium).  A reception will immediately follow the presentation of diplomas.
 
Commencement speaker will be Worcester resident Peter Roberts, a longtime history teacher and coach, who is retiring at the end of this school year. Mr. Roberts, who is well known to students and alumni alike, has taught at Worcester Academy for the last 32 years.  He has coached soccer and track and field.

Also speaking will be Valedictorian Martha Kebeh of Worcester and Salutatorian Varun Bhaskar Nair of Bolton.

PETER ROBERTS
Peter Roberts joined the Worcester Academy faculty in 1984. He currently teaches AP European History, The History of World War II, and The Holocaust. At Worcester Academy, he has coached Varsity and JV soccer, JV basketball, and track. Mr. Roberts is a graduate of North Yarmouth Academy (1970) where he earned 8 varsity letters in three sports: soccer, basketball, track. He received his BA degree from the University of Southern Maine (1975) and has earned postgraduate credits at USM and Clark University. At USM, Mr. Roberts ran the 110-meter high hurdles, tripled jumped, and ran the third leg of the 4X100 relay team. In 1973, he silvered in the high hurdles and bronzed in the 4x100 relay, helping his college track team win the New England State College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). At Worcester Academy, in 1987, Mr. Roberts was assistant coach of the boys varsity soccer team, which had an undefeated season. It was only the second time in the 20th century that the boys soccer team had achieved such a hallmark. In 2010-11, Mr. Roberts coached the WA JV Boys Soccer team to an undefeated 9-0-2 season.  Prior to his employment at WA, Mr. Roberts taught for 5 years at the Kents Hill School, where he coached both varsity basketball and soccer.
