Weekly Athletic Update, 05/17/16

Ed Reilly
It was an historic week on the Track & Field side as long-time Worcester Academy Head Coach, Gerry Frew, recorded his 500th career win. In a career that spans nearly four decades (9 seasons here at the helm of WA Track & Field), we are honored to have an on-going association with Coach Frew and happy to share this amazing accomplishment with coach, his assistants, and his team! Coach Frew is a talented, energetic leader, passionate about the sport of Track & Field and incredibly committed to the athletes he serves so well on a daily basis! Great work, coach!

  • Girls Track & Field finished the regular season with a 21-1 record as they were victorious in road wins last week at Wilbraham & Monson and Williston Northampton. The girls set 14 different PR’s in the win at Wilbraham & Monson, highlighted by Coco Arcand’s victories in the 1500 and the 3000m.
  • The boys team finished the regular season with a 19-4 mark dominating the field events (Amir Miller ’16 has been spectacular) and establishing 15 PR’s including “sprint” victories in the 300m hurdles (Sam Waxlax), 800m (Sam Hatem), and in the Pole Vault (Rohshan Khalili). Both teams are bound for this weekends D II NEPSAC Track & Field Championships that will take place at Tabor on Saturday, May 21.

  • Varsity Baseball continues its domination in league play (4-1 home win over Tabor on Wednesday) and has earned the #1 seed in the upcoming Thomas Blackburn Tournament which will venture outside Worcester County for the 1st time playing the championship at Harvard University on Saturday. Game time will be ~ 20 minutes after the opening round 10:00 am semi-final match (Andover-Exeter). The Hilltoppers will square off against the #4 seed Tabor.

In the front end of Saturday’s twin bill the team ran their record to 8-4 with a win over Cushing Academy, before dropping the back end to a strong Governor’s team. The Big East Tournament will be held on Saturday at Andover.

Wilbraham & Monson School ended the team’s impressive 4-game win streak early in the week on Monday with a 13-7 win, but the Hilltoppers bounced back on Wednesday with an impressive 15-5 conquest of Beaver Country Day School.
  • Coach Zak Johnson’s JV 9 continue their fine season (10-1) with a solid 5-2 road win at Cushing Academy followed by an impressive 12-6 home win over PEA. The bats really came alive on Saturday as the home team pounded out 15 hits with Max Morhardt leading the “hit” parade.
