Weekly Athletic Update, 2/1/16

Ed Reilly
It was a busy week on the hill for our teams as we enter the final month of the regular season. Our Boys Hockey team went 2-0 during the week ripping off consecutive home Holt Conference wins against Moses Brown (3-1) and Rye Country Day School (7-1). Seven different Hilltoppers rang the light in the big win over RCD school on Saturday.

The Girls Basketball team continues their streak (14-1) and more importantly their level of play as they prepare for a big week, including Sunday’s contest with NMH in the New England Prep Showcase here at Rowe Court. Seniors Lexi Hackett and Abby O’Keefe have been the scoring leaders along with freshman Aliyah Boston. Wednesday’s tough road win at Pomfret (61-52) paved the way for their 9th consecutive win on Saturday, a 73-41 victory at Phillips Andover.

Kevin Zifcak’s Girls Hockey team went 1-1-1 on the week ending on a good note with a shut out win over Kingwood-Oxford School from Connecticut (7-0). Michaela McNamara registered a pair of goals and senior Moira Mullaney added 2 assists as the ladies bounced back from Friday’s 1-1 tie with Holdernress and Wednesday’s 4-1 loss at the Brooks School.

Boys Varsity Swim team defeated Portsmouth Abbey on Wednesday (58-40) but lost on Friday evening in Daniels pool to PCD School (36-58). Nick Renzoni (200 and 500 free), Cyrus Salmassi 100 butterfly and breaststroke) and Kevin Arpin (100 free, 100 backstroke) were all double winners in the victory over PA.

Eunice Yang was victorious in both the 200 individual medley as well as in the 100 freestyle in a close loss (40-48) against PA, but the team responded nicely in Friday’s entertaining 49-45 victory over PCD. Congratulations to all team members who swam the “legendary” 10,000 meter swim last Saturday!

Boys Basketball played perhaps their finest game of the season in a 76-67 road win at Cheshire to close out the busy week on Saturday. Five players scored in double digits in this must win which came on the heels of back to back losses to St. Thomas More (80-55) and Phillips Andover 67-58. A rematch with the Commonwealth School on Wednesday looms big for Jamie Sullivan’s team.

The WA grapplers had a very positive week finishing 2-2 with wins over Marvelwood School (45-18) and Hyde School, CT (42-24) and close losses to Phillips Andover (42-25) and LCA (50-27). The Northern New England, Class A and NEPSAC New England Tournament all will take place in the span of the ensuing three weeks.

Natalia Dorogi continues to race well (1st place finish in Friday’s CMSL race) and is being ably supported by Katrina (10th) and Jacqueline Gangi (11th) as the Girls Ski team continues to elevate their standing in the CMSL. Max Glickman challenged for the top spot, settled for a 2nd place finish and cheered on teammates Robbie Carlson and Keith Carroll who ran 12th and 13th in the icy conditions Friday afternoon at Mt. Wachusett.

The Freshman Basketball team split two contests during the week, running past Cushing Academy before falling at home to the always tough St. John’s High team. JV Girls Basketball is riding high on their 2 game winning streak and it is good to see the rapid improvement of players and team under Coach Berberian. The JV Boys Basketball team scorched the nets en route to a 43-33 victory, their first of the season, over Marianapolis on Rowe Court Saturday afternoon.

Matt Adiletta ’17 was instrumental in Saturday’s V2 teams win on the road at MacDuffie School as he poured in a team high 18 points in the 65-38 win.

Around the Rim
Wishing a speedy recovery to WA Head ski coach, Nadine Price who suffered a leg fracture last week in a ski mishap. Coach Tony Johnson has willingly and capably filled the position and will guide the team over the final month of the season.
