Weekly Athletic Update, 1/25/16

Ed Reilly
Although Central Mass was spared the brunt of this weekend’s storm the conditions forced our 1st winter cancellations of the year. Noteworthy was the Girls Varsity Basketball match-up with Nobles, which was postponed on Saturday and pushed out to Tuesday, February 23rd. In a “quiet” week Coach Nagle’s squad rolled over Cushing at Rowe Court on Wednesday as they prepare for contests this week against the Pomfret School and Phillips Andover.
  • Coach Zifcak’s Varsity Girls Hockey team has found their scoring touch amassing 19 goals during the week and posting shutouts against three consecutive opponents. The week ahead will provide a test for the squad with contests against Brooks, Holderness and K-O on the docket.
  • The Boys Hockey team had their Sunday contest with the Hill School postponed due to snowy conditions in Pennsylvania, and despite playing well for long stretches dropped three league contests during the week. A rematch on Wednesday with Moses Brown School (3:20 pm at NESC) looms as a critical Holt Conference game.
  • It was a trick or treat week for Jamie Sullivan’s varsity quintet as they split a pair of league contests (defeating MacDuffie School here in Worcester, losing to Vermont Academy on the road) and dropping a 92-69 road decision to Class AAA NMH on Wednesday. Senior co-captain Kevin Marfo and fellow senior point guard Nassir Barrino have been consistent performers for the Hilltoppers who face a critical week with games against Connecticut powers, St. Thomas More School and Cheshire Academy.
  • The V2 team dropped two contests during the week, losing to PCD 57-48 and in OT to Commonwealth School, 66-58. Ten players scored on Saturday as junior backcourt mates, Kyle Hackett (15 points) and Jack Scheman (11 points) led the way. The team will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday as they travel to Springfield to take on the MacDuffie School.
  • The Central Mass Ski League is off and running and thus far the racers are finding their collective stride with some strong individual performances. Friday’s results saw Natalia Dorogi (3rd), Katrina Gangi (8th) and Jacqueline Gangi (12th) on the girl’s side while Max Glickman (10th ) and Robbie Carlson (11th) worked their way into the top group on the boy’s side. The team races every Friday afternoon at Mt. Wachusett .
  • Emmanuel Masumbuko’s freshman team utilizes their full roster and has been impressive in outpacing the opposition including Wednesday’s home win over Tabor Academy, 56-38.
  • Julie Berberian’s JV Girls Basketball team played two good halves and came away with a nice 28-20 home victory over Cushing on Wednesday.
  • Pat O’Donnell’s JV Basketball team continues to battle in search of their initial win in the 2016 campaign. The additional V2 roster has certainly created a bit of a vacuum on the JV level but the team will continue to work and improve as the year winds down.
