Winter break is always an enjoyable time for teams and coaches to catch their collective breath and recharge their batteries for the hectic weeks ahead. Games will come at a furious clip as the calendar turns to January and teams gear up for a possible run in their respective NEPSAC tournaments.
Our Girls Varsity Hockey team was the first WA team to reconvene as they traveled to Phillips Andover last Wednesday, earning a 1-1 tie with their Class A foe. St. Mark’s proved to be a formidable opponent Friday evening taking the early initiative and posting a 3-0 shut out win over the Lady Hilltoppers. The team now prepares for the rigors of a busy stretch of hockey with Exeter and Berwick on the horizon.
The most recent addition to the WA athletic landscape, the Varsity 2 Boys Basketball team continues to grow but has struggled to find a consistent flow on the offensive end of the floor. The team dropped both their weekly contests, losing at home to the St. George’s School (56-37) and on the road the Wheeler School, (64-41). Three games in five days this week will test the resiliency of the squad.
Dan Nagle’s Varsity Girls Basketball team rolled over Deerfield at Rowe Court on Saturday afternoon. Senior Lexi Hackett poured in a season high 26 points to lead the way! The team will look to continue their winning ways in the week ahead with league contests against Loomis and NMH.
Boys Varsity Basketball earned a split during the week, rebounding nicely from a drubbing at the hands of the Commonwealth School to roll past Class AA foe, St. Andrew’s School, 93-71. Four players scored in double figures for the Hilltoppers and senior backcourt shooter, Tanner Johnson, led the scoring parade with 33 points. Senior James Wells played his best all-around game of the season pouring in 19 points and corralling 11 rebounds.
Boys Hockey dropped their initial contest after the break to a strong NMH squad and will look to rebound on Wednesday as they host Williston at 3:00 pm.
On the sub-varsity level the Freshman team travelled to Marianapolis Prep earning a solid 40-28 victory and the JV Boys team continues to seek their initial win of the campaign as they fell at Marianapolis on Saturday.
