Weekly Athletic Update, 11/16/15

Ed Reilly
The fall 2015 regular season has concluded and for many that signifies the end to their career here at WA. We certainly want to thank and salute those athletes who have been a part of our fall teams as well as the coaches who have worked with them over the past three months. The time and the commitment to fully participate in one of our Interscholastic offerings is extensive and demanding and we are grateful for the sacrifices that many make to enjoy the sport of their choice. On Monday evening, November 16th we will gather together in the Megaron to recognize our teams, our captains and Most Valuable Players as well as our coaches and student-athletes for their accomplishments during this time frame. We also take time to thank those WA community members who stand by our athletes and work with them to ensure their safe passage through the rigors of competition – athletic trainers, equipment and field personnel, administrative staff, Sage Dining personnel, teachers and Advisors.

  • Varsity Girls Soccer team secured a 4th seed in the Class A NEPSAC Tournament and will square off with #5 seed Loomis-Chaffee School here at WA on Wednesday, November 18th at 2:15 pm. The team finished their season on a high note beating Cushing Academy on Saturday in Ashburnham after suffering their lone defeat in their last 14 games on Wednesday, 1-0 to Phillips Andover. It’s been quite a season for the girls and we wish them the very best in the play-offs this week.
  • Our Field Hockey team is back on track securing wins in their final three regular season games, including two home wins this week over Portsmouth Abbey and Cushing Academy. The team has secured the #8 seed in this week’s Class B NEPSAC Tournament and will travel to Governors Academy on Wednesday, November 18th for a 2:15 pm quarterfinal match-up. It is the 1st tournament appearance for our Field Hockey team in the schools history and all team members and coaches are to be congratulated on their outstanding season (14-4).
  • Boys Varsity Soccer completed a successful season (10-5-4) with a shutout (4-0) win over Cushing Academy on Saturday. Wednesday, the boys traveled to highly regarded Salisbury School and played to a 1-1 draw.
  • Varsity Football concluded another successful campaign as well (5-3) but fell to Cushing Academy, 35-26 on Friday evening under the lights at Morse Field.
  • Varsity Volleyball got on quite a roll finishing their season with three straight wins including this weeks victories over Lawrence Academy (3-2) and Cushing Academy (3-0).
  • Both Cross-Country teams raced in the New England Division II Championships at Westminster School on Saturday and senior Ahmed Hussein (34th place finish) and freshman Gabrielle Arcand (26th place finish) once again led the way for the Hilltoppers.
  • On the sub-varsity level our JV volleyball team concluded a terrific season (12-6), and both JV Soccer teams finished on the positive side of .500 (boys going 6-3-3) and the girls, 7-6-1. Our JV Football team was able to play 6 games as well this fall giving many of our underclassmen valuable playing experience for the future.
