Weekly Athletic Update, 10/19/15

Ed Reilly
As we hit the halfway mark in the fall season it was a relatively quiet week. Boys Varsity Soccer opened the week on the Columbus Day holiday with a long road trip to Trinity-Pawling School (Pawling, NY) coming away with a 1-0 win. This set the stage for a key Wednesday afternoon Class A match-up with perennial power Phillips Exeter and once again the Hilltoppers prevailed 1-0 as senior goalie Alex Botazzi registered yet another back-to-back shut out performance. The spotlight once again shifts to the Field Hockey team (10-0) as they posted convincing road wins—3-1 at St. George’s School and 2-0 at Cushing Academy. It has been a storybook season to date for the team and they will test their streak on Friday night under the lights with a 6:00 pm contest at Morse Field against Thayer Academy. Wear your pink garb and plan to come out this Friday evening to cheer on the squad and to take part in their efforts to recognize October as Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Girls Varsity Soccer ended the week on a high note traveling to Wilbraham & Monson Academy on Saturday emerging with a tough 3-0 win. On the heels of a 1-1 home tie with Class A foe Milton Academy the team seems poised to make a play-off push over the final 8 games of the regular season.

Coach Tony Johnson’s Football team survived a late 4th quarter comeback by Cheshire Academy and captured a 35-27 win on Saturday afternoon at Gaskill Field. Sophomore quarterback Daryan McDonald and senior wide-out Brady McMillan combined for a key touchdown pass at the end of the 1st half providing the Hilltoppers with the cushion to ensure their 3rd win of the season. A tough road game at Choate looms next for the squad.

Both cross country teams brought their "A" game to Marianapolis Prep for Saturday’s Invitational meet and emerged with team victories and strong individual performances. The boys team placed three out of the top 5 runners with Ahmed Hussein (1st in 17:37), Brian Quistberg (3rd in 18:28) and Matt Adiletta (5th in 18:58) leading the way. Coco Arcand led the way for the girls team and was ably assisted by Gabbie Conte and Mabel Gao as the team swept to an impressive victory.

Volleyball travelled to the Pomfret School and dropped a 5-set match to the host school. Continuing to play well they are still searching for that combination that will get them into the winners circle on a consistent basis. The JV team, coming off a nice run of wins of late, lost a 2-set match.

Coach Pete Roberts JV Boys Soccer team took on a tough, physical Wilbraham & Monson School on the road and came away with an impressive 2-0 victory. Cole Hackett continues to lead the scoring parade.

JV Girls Soccer pressed the game on the offensive end but could not breakthrough as a strong, balanced Milton team came away with a 4-0 win at Gaskill soccer on Wednesday
