Cum Laude Ceremony Recognizes Senior Scholarship, Honor, Integrity, Character

Communities often earn reputations and are known by their celebrations, including WA’s recent Cum Laude Honor Society inductions, which are all about academic achievement and commitment to purpose.

There are many common denominators amongst the members of this year’s inductees, but, most notably, it is their scholarship, honor, integrity, and character that are celebrated.

The 2015 inductees to Cum Laude are: John “Jack” Chase, Yixin (Eeshing) “Daisy” Chen, Cameron Clouse, Riley Doherty, Lam Ki(Angela) Hung, Megan Kralj, Nicole Laganke, Emma Carter Lamarche, Megan Li, Max MacArthur, Sumehda Mitra, Heidi Munger, Sarah Padgett, Serra “Jesse” Park, Rowen Price, Divinity Sebag, Achint Singh, Madison Steele, Ngoc Anh Truong, and Bradley Waddell.

Following are inductee bios, as read by Director of Upper School Patty Peterleitner.

JOHN “JACK” CHASE

Jack came to us in the 9th grade.  Jack is the kind of person who makes things happen. He loves to learn and always willing to share his ideas and passion.

Quotes:  “Motivated”  does not even come close to capturing the energy that jack brings to his endeavors. “He is the go-to guy, creative and in the moment, he takes intellectual risks that inspire and steer the class forward.”

Academics:  He has taken one of the most rigorous curricula possible: Completing 6 courses every year since 9th grade, with a total of 7 AP courses throughout his WA Upper School career. He has particularly loved his English courses. He is currently enrolled in 3 English courses and chose this course load as he prepares to pursue a career as a professional writer. He also has enjoyed his History classes, especially given the historical events and contexts that could culminate in a potential breadth of resources to support his writing.

Career Aspiration: Long before Middle School, Jack aspired to the goal of becoming a fantasy novel writer; however, it was not until he was 16 that Jack began writing his first novel.  He even included the study of Latin to better pursue his passions and goals as a writer by better understanding “the root of our language.”

Extracurriculars: Jack has been a member of the Varsity Swim Team, had many lead roles in theater productions, to name just a few:
10th Grade was in “For Better of Worse”
11th grade was in “Experiments in the Garden of Eden”
12th grade was in “Shadows on the Wall”

Editor-in-Chief of Lance, and President of the Medieval Club.

Given the breadth of his participation, it comes as no surprise that Jack has received some awards during his US career, to name just a few:
History award,
Commendation for his commitment to Lance,
The Robert J Macko award: that student distinguished for effort in English and enthusiasm and sportsmanship in athletics.

He would especially like to thank his advisor: Tina Thorn for her unwavering support and guidance as he pursues his passion.

“Jack is uniquely smart in so many things” … and his college goals include: “Classics and Creative Writing will be the steady focus with a little acting, peer editing/tutoring, and extracurricular swimming sprinkled in.”  As Jack moves on to Kenyon College, we look forward to his continued success and to being able to cut the line at one of his many book signings!

YIXIN (EESHING) “DAISY” CHEN

Daisy came to WA 3 years ago as a 10th grader from Huzhou, China.  A natural scholar, bright … with exceptional talents in mathematics and language.

Character:  Hardworking, meticulous, unwavering in her effort); in spite of any challenge she faces, Daisy persists and unequivocally all of her teachers assert … “Daisy will always seek any and all opportunities for feedback; she aspires to the rigors and challenges of excellence.”  Intellectually curious, with unrelenting motivation to achieve, a self-starter, always maximizes her experiences; she is sincere and diligent.

Academics: Daisy’s achievement is evident in every discipline, as an international student whose second language is English, it is a testament to her resolute work ethic lending to her success in AP English and AP Chemistry; 2 of the most demanding courses offered at WA. Her chemistry studies have inspired her and her future goals! In total, Daisy has taken 9 AP and Honors classes in just these past 3 years.

Extracurricular:  Daisy extends all of these attributes and personal qualities beyond the classroom; she is an integral member of our community and a great collaborator.  Determination for mastery has supported her success as a valued member of our award-winning math team.
And As a peer tutor in WA’s Math Lab program.
As a member of our orchestra and Contemporary Instrument Club, she plays the flute. She plays the piano for pleasure.
With her quiet reserve, concern for others, and infectious smile, she has been an outstanding Admission Ambassador, leading tours of WA and representing “her school” for our potential new families.
Daisy is a sunny presence in the Heydon Hall, the upper-classman’s girls dormitory on campus. She loves to cook in the kitchen and it gives her great pleasure to share with the entire dorm.
Daisy brings warmth to us along with her bright smile; she embodies all of the WA’s core values.
While she has not yet decided her exact destination for next year, Daisy does plan to follow her heart, she is planning a career in Chemistry … Her dream is to pursue her PhD in Chemistry and one day return to teach in China at “Jor Jung” (Zhejiang) University.  Without question, Daisy will give life to these dreams. Thank you for all of the gifts you have given to us! We are so proud of you!  Congratulations.

CAMERON CLOUSE

Cam came to WA in the 9th grade and ever since has become an integral member of the community who epitomizes WA core values of honor, respect, community, challenge, and personal growth.
His strength of character is evident: Cam is strong minded, tenacious, respectful, and trustworthy, while focusing on both achievement and success. His resiliency has earned him the reputation as a “Hard worker that will go above and beyond in any situation.” “Always there to help and assist and put others first.” All of his teachers assert that, “Cam never backs off from a challenge when it comes his way. Rather, he continues to persevere to meet the challenge, no matter how long it takes.”

When you meet cam, it is refreshing. He has probably one of the best attitudes of any student here on campus and always very positive.  Does not matter the age group, Cam can get along with anyone.  Cam is nice to everyone and he makes it a priority to be inclusive and compassionate.

Academics:  His transcript in impressive; while also immersing himself into life outside of his coursework.  And throughout his US career ... He has compiled a GPA that puts him at the top of his class.  All of his teachers applaud his love of learning, his outstanding preparation with attention to details and capacity to apply his learning. Cam is a consistent classroom contributor, always willing to collaborate, dig deep, and go the extra mile.  His vibrant in-class presence, and exceptional attitude stand out! Cam has always taken the most rigorous courses and even this year he continues this: in fact, even with the demands of the College Process, Cam is taking 3 AP classes in addition to Organic Chemistry, Mandarin 2 and English electives.

Athletics: He has earned the reputation as a fantastic and versatile soccer player that can play anywhere on the field.  Cam has been a 4-year integral member of the WAVBS – a true leader on the field and has earned the reputation as the biggest supporter of Worcester Academy Soccer. In addition to his soccer, Cam also played JV basketball for 3 years at WA. 100% committed athlete that is respected by his teammates and opponents alike.

Clubs:  As if this weren’t impressive enough, Cam has also been a member of our a cappella singing group, the Hillpoppas for the past two years. Cam also cares and values the relationships he has established within our community and was chosen as Cornerstone of the WA Pillars peer education program.
As an Admissions Ambassador, he brings his trademark genuine enthusiasm, good humor, and likability to all his interactions.
Cam is one of the most positive, amiable, and likable people you’ll ever meet.
His enthusiasm is boundless.

It's been an honor to have a student-athlete of this caliber at WA, and I look forward to following along his next four years at Colby! Thank you for all the gifts you have given us!  Congratulations!

RILEY DOHERTY

Riley entered WA as a sixth grader; he is a “lifer.” He was no stranger to us, he had engaged in many Upper School events and I am certain spent countless hours cheering on his sister, Emily ( WA Class 2012), who was one of our most successful student athletes.

Character:  His character is exceptional. A young man of great integrity, impeccable integrity, passionate leader, a true student-athlete who has had a positive influence on his peers, outstanding work ethic, and an intact system of beliefs and values.

Attitude:  Riley epitomizes the adage, “actions speak louder than words.” He is known by his quiet presence; he is someone who is always doing the right thing. He is respectful of others and earns their respect in return.

Academics:  Embraces challenge, electing one of the most rigorous curricula possible:
8 Honors courses/9 AP courses throughout Upper school; even more impressive is that he has taken 4 AP classes in each of his jr/sr years and doubled up in science this year taking both AP chem and H Physics.

Leadership:  Riley served as a class officer in 11th grade, and is the President of the senior class.  Riley has earned his status as a leader through actions and just the way he carries himself. His successful leadership and impressive resume reflect the honor he has earned by his actions that show respect to others, not by actions that would ever draw attention to him.  He has been a member of WA Habitat for Humanity Club for all 4 years; a leader within that club for 3 years and Club President for this year. He has traveled with the club during his March break for the past 3 years to offer a week of full-time service.  Why does he commit to  this?  He says, “I love to see those who need our help and that what we do does make a difference.”

Athletics:  Yes, even though his academic commitment is exemplary and defines Riley as a scholar, he truly believes that his long-term commitment/involvement in soccer has been most instrumental in enriching and shaping his character. He is grateful for the connections to his teammates and the opportunity to develop a sense of cultural diversity amongst his teammates.

Riley’s impressive scholarship is evidence that he has “struck the balance” between rigorous academic demands together with competitive athletics. He has played on the WABVS all 4 years of Upper School at WA.

One of Riley’s favorite quotes is an anonymous saying, “soccer is so much more than a ball and 2 goals; it connects people from all corners of the world.” We have no doubt that he will continue to make a difference and be a standout as he undertakes his studies in Engineering and Business at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and, of course … will make his debut as a defender on the “WPI Engineers” soccer field. Thank you for everything you have given to our community! Congratulations!

LAM KI (ANGELA) HUNG

Affectionately known as Angela here on campus.

Character:  Came to WA 3 years ago, following her older sister from Hong Kong with the hopes of gaining both her independence and a broader international experience; she readily accepted every opportunity that came her way and she continues to embrace everything that the WA community has to offer.

Academics: An intellectual powerhouse, Angela has made herself into the type of student many would aspire to be.  One who always throws herself into her academics, knowing no boundaries, persevering through every challenge, she is a passionate learner.  She loves to learn!  Knowing no limit in terms of dedication and determination when it comes to her studies. All of her teachers comment on her “excellent focus” and her meticulous level of preparedness.

Her transcript speaks for itself, just alone this year, 2 AP math classes – AP Stats and AP Calc BC in addition to AP Physics and AP Economics.  More evidence of her intellectual drive and tenacity is her study of a 2nd foreign language.  French: despite the associated challenges, she is admired for her resolve and desire to learn. Angela aspires to be ready to meet the challenges associated with economics in a global society.

Extracurricular: Beyond the classroom, Angela has continually aspired to challenge herself with both activities she loves ( piano, drawing, painting, and photography) as well as those activities requiring her to stretch well beyond her comfort zone.  The first year that she came, Angela was introduced to life with snow and is most proud of learning to ski and participating in our recreational Ski Program. Her passionate commitment to service, love of people, helping others is evident in her success with the WA Buddy Program, guiding younger students with academic and social issues. She is a Heydon Proctor, a student elected position.

Angela is one of the driving forces in the International student community; especially instrumental in organizing the International student assembly, one of the highlighted performances  of our school year. Her Leadership style is direct, collaborative, and supportive – her leadership speaks to her character.
As Angela moves from Worcester Academy to pursue a career in Business, specifically in Economics, she brings with her the passion to pursue and better understand our Global Economy. However, while Angela has many college options, at this point she is still in the process of choosing her “next stop.”  But one thing is for certain, Angela will continue to persevere, achieve, and shine!  Thank you for all of the gifts you have given to us … we are very proud of you!  Congratulations!

MEGAN KRALJ

Megan came to us in the 6th grade, a “Lifer” and she has never been afraid to be her own person.  She exudes enthusiasm, puts her heart and soul into everything that she does, is naturally curious, and fully embraces every facet of WA. “Megan is a thinker and a doer” I admire her courage to dare!

Character: Her passion for us stems from her belief that WA has encouraged her to give life to her ideas and visions.  Megan is bold with confidence, passionate about her education yet modest and unassuming.  Her work ethic is tireless and she demonstrates a willingness to take on challenges that extend beyond the secondary curriculum.

Academics: Megan is fervent about her learning; her thirst for knowledge encompasses the entire spectrum of our curriculum. This ranges from science, literature, world languages, history, and English. She has assumed the most rigorous schedule possible and some of her teachers describe the reach of her intellect as perceptive, discerning, inspirational, and engaged are just a few of what are themed in Megan’s grade reports.  Not only does her transcript reflect a curriculum full of AP courses, it also includes 2 highly advanced independent studies. The first would be in quantum physics. This was self-directed and Megan did summer self-study to advance her expertise in both math and physics to attain this advanced level of study and the second was AP European History.

Extracurricular:  Megan never loses sight of her goals and an example of her “aspirations in action” and her passion for science and research … her selection to attend the MITes program – this prestigious MIT program (introducing science and engineering courses) chose one student per state to study at MIT for 10 weeks. It should be no surprise that she was acknowledged there for her exceptional insight, creativity in her writing, and her engaging and collaborative spirit.

The element of  Megan’s High School experience that has most impacted her career path is her plasma physics research project: As Megan explains … “My project is a yearlong project about understanding how fusion reactors work. The main motivations behind this project are twofold. First, I wish to gain a deeper understanding of how the Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations are used to predict the behavior of plasma inside the reactor. Secondly, I hope to compute solutions for several reactor shapes, in order to determine their respective plasma shapes.

Personal:  In addition to all of this: She studies Japanese and writes poetry
Leader of the Innovation Club: developing a 4th grade science curriculum for Union Hill School: such a gift to these students.
Head of Robotics Team
Volunteer at Boston’s Museum of Science
Lastly, new to her plate is her cheerleading with the Bay State All-stars.

Thank you Megan for all of the gifts you have given to us!  There is little left here to do now, so Megan can take her enthusiasm and zest to MIT as she pursues her passion: Nuclear Physics. Congratulations!

NICOLE LAGANKE

Niki came to WA in the 7th grade and immediately it was clear that she had an unwavering work ethic, commitment to purpose, and was a community role model.  It was evident then … and that Niki stands here today, is evidence now.

Character:  Niki has a sharp intellect that she always puts to the best use.  “Niki is a wonderful mix of sustained academic achievement (as one of class 2015’s top students) , active engagement, unassailable character, and passion for giving back to her community.
Her “laser focus” goal of being inducted into the Cum Laude society has been since 9th grade; evident in her never once missing the Headmaster’s list. But this is not something that Nikki would tell you … she is understated and humble about her accomplishments. Always turning the spotlight to showcase someone else’s accomplishments, she is quick to complement and celebrate her classmates’ victories and triumphs. She is a true collaborator, has a huge heart, with genuine compassion; despite her intellectual capacity and ambitious nature, there is only a natural desire to serve; bringing out the best in others. These are the characteristics that will serve her best as she pursues a career in health care.

Academics:  Niki has challenged herself with as rigorous a course schedule as WA can offer, accessing her options that represent every discipline, also while maximizing the number of honors and AP courses in each discipline.  Her College Counselor describes her schedule as “High Octane,” and as a senior, she maintains this momentum … the challenge of  pursuing 6 major subjects, including AP stats and AP Calculus.  Every teacher unanimously applauds her for her thoughtful preparation, her active engagement and participation, her capacity to answer the questions while questioning the answers. Niki respects the learning process, is eager to learn and passionate for making it all matter.

Extracurricular:  Outside of class, Niki has made significant community contributions:
As a Varsity Athlete: she was an integral member of our varsity girls soccer and varsity lacrosse.  As a WA ambassador, she is often the go-to girl: Earning the reputation as a caring and gracious host within our community and her character and poise is evident beyond the WA community, as well. WA is proud of  Niki’s contributions and  exceptional character.

Personal:  Niki aspires to serve no matter where her path leads; We are confident that she will continue to make a difference through her extraordinary focus, passion, drive, and, benevolence … Now, the Honors Program at Penn State is the lucky recipient as she pursues her studies in Pre-Med. Congratulations!

EMMA CARTER LAMARCHE

Emma came to WA in the 6th grade, a lifer.  She has earned the reputation as an Academic Powerhouse. She has consistently been at the top of her class since she came to WA and every one of her teachers echo the same theme, “meticulous, resolute, and witty.”

Character: Emma is hardworking, deliberate and purposeful; never leaving a stone unturned. She is a shining scholar; her personal integrity is truly exemplary. She is a highly compassionate person who willingly puts others before her own self-interest.

Modeling her ideal in life by becoming someone “who is happy in being who and what they have become.”

Academics: This year, she carries 4 AP courses and 2 honors courses. One of her greatest sources of pride is having pushed herself to excel in her extremely demanding curriculum she has chosen throughout her time at WA; along with the college process this year, she still has excelled and persevered. Evidence of her success, achievement, and scholarship across all disciplines are the following awards that she has earned:
Henry Wood Fowler Latin prize (9th grade)
Cloyd E Small Biology Prize (9th grade)
Alumni Art Award (9th)

Extracurricular: Her interests are varied and there are no challenges too big to keep Emma from participating: She has dogged resolve on the athletic fields and in the pool – unfaltering 7-year member of the swim team (Emma has significantly contributed to our distance events such as the 500 m Free, also participating on the track, cross-country, and Lax teams. She is a passionate artist, regularly submitting her work to Lance (our literary and artistic student publication).  She is co-captain of the Debate team, and a club Leader for the 81-119 Club.  This club offers service to a Local Nursing Home helping residents with activities and even sponsoring a fashion show featuring prom dresses. Outside of school Emma is an avid rock-climber and is hoping to continue this activity in college.

When speaking with Emma prior to today to review the outline of the day, she wanted to be sure that her teachers be recognized for their unending support, and a big thank you. Especially her advisor Pat Carter who has been her rock all throughout high school.  Emma has brought so much to WA; an impressive young woman, through her scholarship, her morality … her vital leadership qualities emanate … As she moves on to Wellesley … she plans to study Economics and take a bit of time to pursue community activities … she has made a difference here with us and will certainly be a bright light in the Wellesley community … Thank you for all you have given to us. Congratulations!

MEGAN LI

Character: Megan came to WA in the 9th grade and has been a top student ever since.  Megan is “exceptionally bright”, “wonderfully genuine” and “extremely talented”. Megan has a depth of sincerity and gratitude, recognizing how fortunate she has been to receive a WA education. She is so appreciative of her good fortune.

Academics: Megan has earned the reputation for her scholarship and overall achievement as an “intellectual dynamo.” Always embracing every challenge and opportunity. Megan has accessed every facet of the WA curriculum, evidence of her willingness to embrace challenge and rigor, and evidence of her tremendous work ethic; she has taken the toughest courses – she has taken 10 AP courses during her 4 years and this year alone is taking 6 full-year academic courses, including 4 AP courses, Honors, AP, and Spanish 4.
Megan, however, is exceptionally adept in mathematics with great success on both the AP Calculus AB and BC tests. Megan is not one to discuss her academic successes, she is very humble and modest about her capacity and achievements.

Extracurricular: Megan’s profound commitment to the WA community is evident in her leadership and talents, both extending beyond the classroom; For the past 3 years, Megan has been an integral member of our Admissions Ambassador team – with grace and poise, she embodies and is the epitome of the WA core values, she represents these with all of the prospective families she interacts with. For the past 2 years, as the Editor, Megan has been the driving force, with unrelenting effort bringing to life the publication of the Vigonia (Our school newspaper).

Beyond the WA community, Megan is a gifted pianist, a competitive figure skater … she embraces the challenges and relishes the benefits that emanate from her dedication to challenges and persistent pursuit of her goals.

Megan most values honesty, integrity, faith, humility, and passion. She loves math and science hoping to pursue engineering as she is off to McGill University.  Megan has been one of WA’s highest achievers. “ Megan will always be welcome here where she will have left a legacy of achievement, involvement, and success” Thank you for these gifts and Congratulations!

MAX MCARTHUR

Max came to the WA in the 8th grade. He quickly earned the reputation as a student of exceptional ability and of continued promise of excellence.

Character:  His passions are many and even though he may appear to be reserved yet this is with quiet resolve and deep introspection … he is truly inspirational, demonstrating a genuine zest to experience and give life to his dreams:
He wants to fully experience everything that WA has to offer. Max is noted for his “sharp intellect,  persistent diligence in pursuit of academic excellence.” Max’s transcript is the result of his invincible work ethic, deliberate and thoughtful classroom participation and his creativity in both the performing arts (as a dancer and skilled flutist)  and computer programming.”

Academics:  Although he initially maintained a “quiet presence” in all of his classes, Max has become a confident and articulate contributor, self-directing his learning both in and out of the classroom, he is an skillful problem solver who often creates his own process … can “think outside the box” and during his time at WA he has embraced every opportunity that comes his way.

Max has challenged the WA curriculum for sure; evidence of his excellence in scholarship is evident on his transcript that reports the maximum number of honors and AP classes.  He is truly an AP scholar: and just to mention a few examples … He earned a perfect score on the Calculus BC, Stats, and Chem and a near perfect score on the AP English Language – all taken concluding his junior year.

Extracurricular: His musical talent as a flutist was recognized last spring when he and the pit orchestra won a highly competitive regional High School Musical Theater award; has been dancing and performing since age of 5.  However, during the past five years, he has competed throughout the state in both jazz and tap winning medals ranging from “High Silver” to “High Gold,” this is the highest award and most impressive. He was recently notified that he has been invited to compete in a National Dance competition upcoming in July.

His talents and interests do not end here: he has self taught computer programming skills: C++, Java, HTML, attended a summer “gaming” academy during the summer between sophomore and junior year and wrote his first fully functional computer game.  This potentially peaked his career interests … evidence of this potential interest was his successful 2013 summer internship at the Hopkinton-based technology incubator, “Tech Sandbox”  – where he was known as a self-starter, with creativity, insight, and accuracy.

“All of Max’s teachers concur that because of his keen introspection, he has the ability to draw upon his experiences and self-reflections to continually improve and grow.” All of these achievements are paving the way  for Max’s next stop? Which he is still deciding upon … so either UC Berkely or UC San Diego. What choices … We are confident that he will shine no matter the next stop. Thank you for all you have given to us!  Congratulations!

SUMEHDA MITRA

SUMEDHA came to WA in the 8th grade. Immediately it was clear that upon her arrival she embraced all things that WA has to offer both in the classroom and in the greater WA community.
She possesses a vibrant spirit, has a sincere zest for life, a passion for ideas, has a steadfast and unwavering work ethic.  A few adjectives that come to mind when one meets Sumheda are: earnest, focused, and eager.

Academics:  Sumedha is humble about her successes and achievements, never one to look for the spotlight to be shining; she is all about purpose, quiet, understated, and reflective. Even though her teachers assert … her work is inspirational, outstanding, and exceptional; while her preparation is impeccable, in every class. Sumheda conducts herself honorably while taking the time to consider the reaction generated by each action. This trait is an extension of her curiosity and desire to learn.

Quotes:  “She is a fearless participant, willing to take intellectual risks and test her ideas in the public forum.”

Extracurricular:  Sumedha is mature and already knows that her reward is not just in the results of her actions but also in the doing. This is evident in her role as student, as Head Ambassador, as French Club Leader, as an accomplished musician in our performing Arts performances; she is both a pianist and percussionist.  She takes these skills as volunteer in the community-based Afternoon Tunes Program at All Saints Church.

Personal:  Her personal standards and core values have guided her;  Sumedha’s character is extraordinary. She is honorable, kind, caring, compassionate; will always put the needs of another in front of her own – a great quality for one who continues to be dedicated to a career in public health; She does recognize that learning happens outside of the classroom and Sumheda has already spent much time pursuing her long-term goal through completing multiple laboratory and hospital internships.  Last summer, she competed for and was selected for a volunteer research position at UMASS Medical Center’s nationally recognized Department of Psychiatry, culminating in a 30-page research paper that is now the backdrop for her Capstone graduation project and will be published.  Anyone in the research field knows the significance of such an accomplishment.

Sumheda gives nothing less than her personal best each and every day.  She values her education, taking not one bit of it for granted; she is so grateful for the time she has spent at WA and we are grateful too … for having Sumheda in our community. Thank you for all you have brought to us! Johns Hopkins is the next stop and unequivocally, Sumheda will continue to shine for the next 4 years. Congratulations!

HEIDI MUNGER

Heidi came to us last year, but her spirit, commitment to purpose, and presence makes it seem that she has been an integral part of the WA community for much longer.
Some of you may have missed out on getting to know Heidi well, and this is likely because she lives in two worlds, which are generally seen as impossible to simultaneously inhabit. You may not know this, but Heidi is a national-caliber figure skater which makes the fact that she has managed to balance her academic schedule with a full-time training regime all the more remarkable. Heidi sometimes drives back and forth between Worcester Academy and the skating rink in Boston multiple times a day. Almost none of the other top-level skaters in her program attend school; they are full time athletes who do online courses or have tutors on the side. Heidi is an anomaly, managing to do very high level work in the car or at the rink. She has sacrificed many aspects of a typical high school experience to pursue both academics and skating at the highest level possible, supported by the similarly Herculean efforts of her parents.

Character: Heidi is Determined, Accomplished, Resilient, Tenacious, and Honorable. She never seeks public recognition for her incredible athletic and academic achievements, and is probably somewhat horrified to be receiving public accolades right now as she stands here.  Her work ethic is second to none; she writes papers in the car and between grueling sessions on the ice – sitting alone on the bleachers with her head in a book rather than socializing with the other skaters.

Academics: Her rigorous academics include 6 AP classes during 11th and 12th grade. She is a quiet force to be reckoned with in all subject areas. Her achievement is clear and her resolute commitment to her academics is acknowledged by her teachers.

Outside of WA: Heidi is deeply committed to participating in community outreach and service … She is a mentor for younger figure skaters at the Skating Club of Boston and she also teaches in the therapeutic skating program where she leads adults with significant mental and physical disabilities to athletic feats that they did not think possible, such as ice skating on their own. Living with her visually impaired grandmother has taught Heidi many things and she has tried to honor her grandmother and give back to the community by volunteering at the Perkins School for the Blind, where she helps blind teenagers to navigate the world. Helping a blind boy to sink a putt at a golf course was one of the most rewarding experiences that she’s had.

Heidi values the diversity that WA has to offer and the fact that the school enabled her to pursue her two loves simultaneously. She is so grateful to this community for making this possible.

As Heidi has left her mark on us we are confident that she will continue to make a difference as she moves on to her “next step” … For next year, Heidi has committed to assume a full-time figure skating training regime with the Boston Skating Club with the hopes of qualifying for the “National Championships” … and after that, she is off to Wellesley College to pursue her other passions of mathematics and science.  Thank you for the differences you have made within our community. We are very proud of you … Congratulations!

SARAH PADGETT

Character: Came to WA in the 6th grade, Sarah’s love of people and zest for life sets her apart in her love for WA as well as in her curiosity, her scholarship, and her leadership.  She “speaks her mind, throws herself into activities that she enjoys … Sarah’s strength of purpose overrides her worrying about what others think. Her fervent spirit and sensitivity to the needs of others inspires her call to action.  Her enthusiasm for this community crosses all lines of friend groups; and epitomizes inclusivity, mentorship, and collaboration.  Sarah makes it her point/purpose to create community connections. Sarah believes that “everyone is interesting once you get to know them.” A curious intellect, her excitement for learning is infectious.  Sarah always wants to learn not just the what but also the why: her genuine interest extends beyond the classroom. This attitude is the basis for her strength of character, respect, and integrity; Sarah is a natural leader.

Leadership: examples:
Elected freshman class Officer,
Elected Sophomore Class president,
Voted as Cornerstone Pillars Peer educator,  Diversity Teach-in facilitator.

Extracurricular: She has also participated in WA’s Dexter Prize twice, and placing first in 1 of these. She is an exemplary ensemble member in the WA’s Performing Arts appearing in 4 WA productions; everything from a monkey suit to hiding behind yellow spandex, Sarah always shines with her talent and enthusiasm.

While in the Upper School, she has been an integral member of our Varsity Swim team
She is one of the top sprinters for both the 50/100 freestyle and for the 200/400 freestyle relays; she is one of our top scorers every year. Also Sarah is one of the most welcoming and encouraging to all of our new swimmers.

Again, it is clear to all of us that Sarah actively engages in what she believes and her actions are purposeful and deliberate. Her actions extend beyond the WA community; Sarah’s spirit calls her to action Sarah was involved with supporting the mission of Kai’s Village – an organization founded by Sarah’s cousin that provides community-based support for families with children fighting terminal illness.  She has aptly earned the reputation as one who “Leads by example” and is a considered a “facilitator for change;” She always has and continues to make a difference.

Quotes: “Sarah sees value in consciously shifting her own perspective to see the views of others, and wants to push others to do the same.”  Sarah has raised the bar here because she “lives” all of the WA core values.”  I am confident that Sarah will continue to do great things and will make a profound impact during her time at Wesleyan.  Thank you for all you have given to us. We are grateful and proud.  Congrats!

SERRA “JESSE” PARK

Character:  Affectionately known as “Jesse” at WA, you’re first impression of Jesse might be quiet and reserved, as she rolls around the quad on one of her many skateboards. But it quickly becomes apparent that this girl is a dynamo:  vivacious, adept, intellectually skillful and sharp, athletic, and artistically inclined.

Academics:  Each of her teachers concur that Jesse can handle whatever academic challenge comes her way.

She is preternaturally talented and things come easily to her, but she also works tirelessly, and is more than willing to sacrifice social time to study on weekend nights without resentment.  She has also volunteered her time to think deeply about questions that impact everyone at the school, participating in committee work involving the schedule, dress code, etc.

In all that Jesse brings to the WA community it is in earnest; she is eager because she knows that her reward is not just in the result of her actions but also in the doing! Has taken a combined 15 AP and Honors courses during her 4 years at WA.

Quotes:  Teachers enjoy Jesse and all that she brings to her learning: “sets the bar for the rest of the class,” “gives 100% all of the time,” Thorough, reflective, well-organized” and articulate.” Every teacher lauds Jesse’s academic devotion, revealing her discipline and natural curiosity; she has a natural intellect. She also has a much appreciated razor sharp wit that she deploys in class and in casual conversations in the quad, and is an inspired and inspiring big sister to Saewon.

Extracurriculars:  Music is a true passion for Jesse; multi-talented as a clarinetist, actress, and dancer.  Music fuels her soul. This, will last her lifetime. She Leads the WA Dance Team with passion and talent for choreography, and has performed in numerous WA musicals.  Jesse performed in the Pit Band for "Pippin" and "Cabaret" before making the move to the stage as an actor and featured dancer in "Carousel" and "Threepenny Opera." She also served as the Stage Manager for "Shadows on the Wall." Whether playing music, performing, or working back stage, Jesse has been a leader and a teacher to her peers and an outstanding performer for audiences.  She wants to give to others some of what music has given to her: she has volunteered with Afternoon Tunes program at All Saints Church, giving music lessons to those less fortunate.  And this year she is the director of that program.

As a dorm proctor in Heydon, Jesse fully embraces WA’s cultural diversity, welcoming every opportunity to broaden her experience of multiplicity and perspective. She finds common ground within our diverse community and is inspired by both her Korean and Californian roots.

She has truly accomplished so much and as she moves on to University of California at Berkeley her strength of character and gratitude will complement her strong capacity for  self-reflection, energy and success. There is no doubt that Jesse will shine.  Thank you for the gifts you have given to WA!   Congratulations!

He is quite the young man!  So well-liked, with an infectious bright smile and sparkling eyes; he always engages before he speaks. Thoughtful, cooperative, generous, and insightful.  His enthusiasm for ideas and creative expressions is boundless; his interests are varied as are his friend groups. Div is one of those unique individuals who wants to find the best in every experience and in all that he does: Div is comfortable in who he is while sensitive to the needs of those around him.  He is comfortable in the classroom, backstage in the theater, in the tech office, and even by himself, knitting.

Maddie is known as s tenacious worker.  She is articulate; using questions as a way to guide her learning/for Maddie, questions are for clarification rather than lack of understanding.  Maddie has sampled the most rigorous courses; at both the honors and AP level. Enrolling in four AP classes across disciplines in each of her junior/senior years. All of her teachers describe her as  “thirsty” for learning; evidence is in her decisions to take EdX courses (On-line courses through Harvard’s extension school) as her summer activity: Just because she was interested, also she took a lecture course on Justice and another on the “Science of Everyday thinking”…. She brings this same level of enthusiasm/commitment/passion no matter what the task. Maddie’s work ethic, is second to none.

I know Maddie will continue to inspire others through the work she started here as she moves on. No matter where she chooses and just like she did here … She will make a difference! Thank you for all the gifts you have given to us! Congratulations!

NGOC ANH TRUONG

Anh began attending WA as a sophomore, only 3 short years ago when she came to us from Vietnam; truly inspirational what she has accomplished during this time.  She has earned the reputation as  “Unusually dynamic in spirit, Ahn’s fundamental energy complements all that she does with her calm and quiet demeanor.”

Ahn’s Character is exceptional:  She embodies and exudes WA’s core values of respect and responsibility; Anh is proud to be a WA student.  She quietly perseveres, is steadfast in her dedication to her studies and self-improvement, is passionate about her contributions to our community and is self-motivated to be the best that she can be. She perseveres 100 percent of the time and embraces every challenge she is faced with. Anh is sharp and skilled. As resilient and tenacious as Anh is, she is equally compassionate and kind; self-disciplined, nurturing both body and mind.  She is mature; openly spiritual – she draws great strength from her faith. Brilliant sense of humor that might just find its way into her studies that teachers have recognized to enliven her work. I am honored to have her as part of my dorm family.

She is a delight and we are grateful for all that she brought to us. And as her favorite quote states.” Busy Living Or Busy Dying” Anh will certainly continue to be very “Busy Living” no matter where she chooses to take her talents! Congratulations!

 BRADLEY  WADDELL

A WA lifer, “Brad” was no stranger to the WA community when he arrived on the first day of sixth grade. His older sister was an academic dynamo who graduated from WA in the Class of 2012. Brad did not worry about the “shoes” he needed to fill to follow as Ashley’s younger brother … clearly, his standing here before you substantiates his own achievement in scholarship … He has done an exceptional job!

Character:  Brad has clearly defined his niche here at WA as an “academic powerhouse/ achiever” but the trick is truly his ability to prioritize, striking just the right balance between his passions and demands; Brad has valued his WA education and is most grateful for having had this opportunity. He knows that by embracing each experience (no matter if in the classroom or outside of the classroom) he will set into motion subsequent opportunities and a myriad of possibilities. He has earned the “reputation” as one who does not wait for opportunity, rather he actively creates his own. He is goal-oriented and knows what he needs to do and he does it.  Personable, tenacious, determined, circumspective.  Brad’s characteristic aspiration for  “more” began long before today … it began the day he walked onto our campus.

Academics: Education has been at the core of Brad’s pursuits and clearly he aspires to achieve at the highest degree of classroom rigor and challenge; taking the most challenging course load possible.  For example: This year taking 6 major academic courses, all at the AP and Honors level.  Loves science/math and upon graduation will have taken a total of 8 AP/honors level math/science courses. Brad is keeping it interesting … he does have strong interest in math/science, he also excels in the humanities and is possibly considering pursuing business as a college option. Has earned his spot as an AP Scholar with distinction; in 2014 alone sat for 5 AP tests, achieving top scores on each.  Just to mention more evidence of his scholarship and commitment to becoming a global citizen: Brad was chosen to take courses through the Johns Hopkins Center for talented youth: Studied Spanish at the Middlebury-Monterey Academy. Participated in a Summer Spanish Language Immersion Program in Costa Rica.

Extracurricular: and beyond his academic success … Brad is very proud to represent WA as a Student Athlete committed to sportsmanship and athletic rigor; a 3-year member  of our Varsity Baseball Team, this year’s captain and as a 3rd Baseman, and also had extended his athletic commitment beyond the WA community as a player for the highly esteemed and demanding New England Ruffnecks. Why so demanding? A College Development Program that has established a national reputation as one of the finest programs of its kind in the country.

Beyond baseball, Brad is equally proud of his three-year contributions as an active member of our highly successful WA Math team.  In addition, Brad has always been committed to “giving back” to the WA community and for the past 3 years has been an Ambassador for our Admission office.  Brad has been one of the go-to guys of this program and as evidence of his wonderful contributions in this position, he was selected as one of our Head Ambassadors this year.

Beyond WA: He has tutored and been a teacher assistant in a community-based math program for gifted and talented math students where he attends weekly sessions.

Brad has been such a presence here and there is no question that he will continue to do extraordinary things. Thank you for everything that you brought to us and I am certain that you will continue to achieve and to succeed as you move on to Tufts University. Congratulations!
