Sixth Graders Present Interdisciplinary Arts Cafe, A 'Grecian Goodies Marketplace'

Worcester Academy Sixth Graders presented "Grecian Goodies Marketplace" as their 2015 Arts Cafe -- the Sixth Grade's signature interdisciplinary learning module.

Taking active roles in the Arts Cafe were:

Michael Berberian, Giovanni Cino, Christopher Consigli, Faith Eteng, Samantha Feldman, Zach Girardi, Stella Gray, Lauren Gray, Alexander Guimbard, Angela Hooker, Hunter Hutchings, Cole Keeler, Lauren Kirk, Anna Leclerc, Mathieu Legault, Samuel Levenson, Darius Lomax, Devin Lomax, Forest Ma, Maxwell Mallett, Owen McCarthy, Alison Miller, Juliette Noel, Peter Ojerholm, Elias Perez, Devin Perry, Anthony Petrone, Madelyn Platzman, Tyla Puryear DeMeulenaere, Alana Saucier, Selena Shen, Victoria Tirado, Allison Yanco, Alec Zhu, and Adam Zivny.

Worcester Academy's Arts Cafe is a Sixth Grade interdisciplinary course combining social studies, art, math, English, drama, and technology, over the period of one semester. The students work in teams and run the Cafe with a distinct international theme. They endeavor to serve up meals as well as cultural understanding.

While completing Arts Cafe studies, students research the culture and foods, prepare menus and art, and then cook and serve Cafe-style delights. Afterwards, they handle bills for customers, who included parents, faculty members, and fellow students.

This year, in keeping with the traditional Greek theme, the menu for the day was prepared by the students: Greek flatbreads with chicken or lamb gyros, including tzatziki sauce and Greek salad.

A mask performance focused on the Greek myth of Pandora's Box (or The Making of Mortals).

Entertainment also featured Sirtaki, a Greek circle dance performed by the WA students.

The Arts Cafe supports the Worcester Academy mission, core values, and goals to promote diversity, encourage technology integration, and to offer experiences that teach students real-world entrepreneurial skills.

The Worcester Academy Arts Cafe program, a signature experience of Sixth Grade at the Academy, was designed by Visual and Performing Arts Department co-chairs Eliza Hale and Elizabeth Bowles. They have presented the program at various independent school conferences as a model interdisciplinary and project based-learning experience. The Arts Cafe program has also been featured in SchoolArts Magazine in an article authored by Mrs. Bowles.
