Weekly Athletic Update, 12/08/14

Ed Reilly
After a brief but busy respite WA athletics transitioned into the winter season with a full slate of contests. Over 200 US athletes fill out the rosters for our ten winter programs and all but two of these teams (swim and ski) played over the past week. Prior to recapping the games we want to extend a warm welcome to our new head coaches – Guy Angers with the BV hockey team and Dan Nagle, the head coach of our GV basketball team.
  • It didn’t take long for the GV basketball team to secure Coach Nagle with career win #1 at WA as they opened their season with a stirring 46-44 win at home against Marianapolis Prep. Junior sharpshooter Alexis Hackett led the scoring parade with 15 points and also hauled in 12 rebounds. The size and depth of The Rivers School proved to be too much, however, as the team suffered a 61-44 setback in their second contest of the week at Rowe Court. The team will travel to St. George’s School on Wednesday prior to playing in the Blackburn tournament this weekend.
  • The GV hockey team roared out to a 2-0 start with convincing wins over the Tilton School (5-2) and Portsmouth Abbey (4-1) as seniors Alexandra Mitchell (3 goals) and Maddie Evangelous (2 goals, 3 assists) led the way offensively. The team will be tested this week as they squeeze three contests into the next six days!
  • The BV hockey team will be road tested early in the season as they play several games away from the friendly confines of the NESC. To date, the team has dropped their first two games, 5-0 at Middlesex and 4-3 this past Saturday at The Holderness School. Freshman goalie, Devin Barresi has excelled to date for the Hilltoppers!
  • The BV basketball team has earned some early season travel points as well having opened the season with three road contests, including this past weekend at the Blair Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament in New Jersey. The squad stands 2-0 in league play with wins over both Brimmer & May and Cheshire Academy sandwiched around a tough 63-59 loss to Blair Academy. Wednesday’s league contest at Rowe Court against The Tilton School is a headliner for the week ahead!
  • It will be difficult to match the excitement – not to mention the result – of Wednesday’s JV boy’s basketball game against The Hillside School. Sophomore guard Dervin Hylton went the length of the floor in the final seconds and dropped the winning shot through the hoop as time expired giving the JV team a 53-52 win before a packed house of WA fans!
  • The wrestling team opened with a pair of home victories on Saturday as well with junior Turner Geenty securing a 42-36 win over Lawrence Academy with a much needed final match pin! The team opened strong with a 51-18 victory over The Governors Academy.
  • Freshman basketball team roared out to an early lead and hung on to secure a nice early season win over NMH, 33-31
