Display Reflects Studies Of Quipas, Santeria, Huichol & Quinceañera

Dr. Anthony Butler's Spanish 4
and 5 classes have been studying the Incan "Quipas" knots system, Santería, and the Huichol people of Mexico. The results of their studies are now on display on the Upper floor of the newly-renovated Walker Hall. Take a look when you have a chance!

Also on display: the beautiful Quinceañera dress worn by Marislena "Maggie" Amezquita, Worcester Academy Class of 2016. Quinceañera is the festive occasion of a girl's fifteenth birthday that is celebrated in many parts of Latin America. Maggie's Latin heritage is Colombian.

Here are some of the concepts represented in the displays

Quipus
Quipus project represents the third guiding task in the study of Andean States in Spanish 4-5-6.  Here, students were challenged to research the Incan documentation system of knots (quipus), recreate a quipus, and write how their art recasts this pre-columbine tradition as well as showcases their life's past milestones, and milestones to come.  All of the quipus, then, detail students' memorable events, and hopes, while engaging with a culture that might seem very distant.

Santería
The Orishas project was the third guiding task in last year's study of Cuba in Spanish 4-5.  Here, students sought to display their understanding of religious syncretism in Cuba.  Each student chose an Orisha, or deity from the religion called Santería, researched cultural and religious significance, and drew colored models to later recast in statues.  All of the statues and drawings demonstrate the complexities and uniqueness of Cuban religious diversity.

Huichol
This task required that students research the challenges of the indigenous people of northwest Mexico, the Huichol, learn of their art, and challenge themselves to refashion their own creativity. After exploring how the Huichol recreate mythological beliefs in textiles, students adopted this activity by merging the practice of yarn art with their own beliefs on creation and apocalypse.
