GIRLS ARE SOCCER CHAMPS
Monday, November 23, 2009
The Worcester Academy Girls Varsity Soccer Team won its second New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Class B Title in two years yesterday. The team beat Pomfret 1 - 0 in double overtime, successfully extending its reign as NEPSAC champs.

"I could not be more thrilled with the performance of our team this season!" said Adam Strogoff '97, head coach. "Our exciting run through the playoffs, culminating in our second-straight championship, was a testament to our team's fighting spirit and sense of unity."

The winning goal was scored by Hilltopper Jill Marois '12 in the 92nd minute of the game. The Worcester Academy girls held that lead through the final minutes of the game with tenacious defense. In the end, it was enough to beat Pomfret, which had been undefeated going into yesterday's game.

Bridget McCarthy '12 made three saves to earn the shutout.

"One of the toughest things in sport is pushing yourself to achieve championship level performance and certainly the toughest thing is to find a way to remain there," said Edward Reilly, Worcester Academy's director of athletics. "To repeat as champions is a tremendous accomplishment and a great testament to the drive, determination, and spirit of all the members of the girls varsity soccer program.

"We are delighted for them and our entire school community shares their joy in winning the 2009 Class B championship," said Mr. Reilly.
