The mission of the Theater program at Worcester Academy is to inspire both passion and respect for theater as an art form. Whether providing a first opportunity for students who are curious about theater arts or furthering the training of serious theater students, two guiding principles are hallmarks of the program: ensemble and excellence.

By emphasizing the concept of ensemble, students learn to work in an environment where creative courage is both fostered and supported. The emphasis on excellence allows for the development of a community of young artists who collaborate with teachers and mentors to strive for the highest possible artistic standards.

In the Theater program, the emphasis on commitment to the work, coupled with a spirit of creative adventure and respect for the ideas of students as developing artists, creates an environment in which students have the opportunity to discover their personal and artistic potential. In theater classes and in the performance program, students have the opportunity to explore a wide variety of theatrical experiences from the classical to the contemporary and from the perspective of designer, technician, historian, director and actor.

Furthermore, since seeing great theater is an essential part of the learning process, students attend a variety of professional productions at a number of critically-acclaimed theater companies in Boston, Cambridge, Providence and Hartford. Theater companies also occasionally rent the Academy's elegant Hervey S. Ross '46 Auditorium, Warner Theater when not in use by the Academy.
