The middle school years -- typically ages 11 to 14 -- are an exciting, sometimes difficult, and formative time. During this unique and challenging period of transition from pre-adolescence to early adolescence, children discover their place in the world and gain a sense of self. This is an age when there is tremendous growth, energy, enthusiasm, and, at times, moments of self-doubt. Understanding and enjoying this age group, middle school teachers offer a sound balance of structure, flexibility, and freedom, while stressing the values of accepting personal responsibility and treating others with respect.

Opportunities for exploring and developing skills that all students need are provided with an understanding of individual learning patterns and interests. Students are enrolled in a comprehensive program of study that includes core academic classes, an introductory arts curriculum, physical education, and the development of good organizational and study skills. Most courses are required, as it is important for students to share a common base of information and skills needed to achieve success in the Upper School.

What's more, our supportive Advisory Program helps students make the adjustment to Middle School and ultimately prepares them for the Upper School, ensuring that no child at Worcester Academy gets "lost." Should students struggle with their schoolwork, our Academic Support staff will coordinate individualized tutorial support to help them succeed.
