 | Each middle school student meets daily with an advisor who serves as the student's primary advocate and liaison with the home. The advisor-advisee system gradually makes clear to students that they, not their parents, are to accept responsibility and accountability for their schoolwork and conduct, which is the Upper School's cornerstone for course work.
The advisor reviews Progress Reports, which contain information from each classroom teacher concerning homework completion, recent grades and overall classroom performance, with the student during weekly Advisory meetings. The reports detail academic progress, classroom behavior, and the general adjustment to Worcester Academy and are made available online to parents. Extending praise and encouragement as well as suggesting improvements, the reports inform parents and help to keep them involved.
Report cards recording middle school students' performance and progress go home three times per year at the end of each trimester.
Under the watchful eyes of our caring teachers/advisors, each student makes an individual journey from childhood toward adolescence. Along the way, every boy and girl meets ideas and gains experiences that open the door to the wider world. At the same time that each student faces challenges in the classroom, in athletics and in the arts, he or she is expected to give and receive respect, assume responsibility and accept accountability. Taken together, these are, we believe, the meaningful early milestones leading to good habits and thoughtful decisions.

| | To help the students in their social development, we organize dances, field trips, a Field Day and other group activities. One example is the start-of-the-year trip to Harrington Outdoor Education Center for Grade 6, which stresses cooperation and trust. This year's seventh graders are traveling to Rhode Island for a three-day visit to Nature's Classroom. Another example is the three-day urban trek that eighth graders take to New York City, in conjunction with Outward Bound.
On campus students have certain monitored freedoms. In addition to traveling between buildings for courses, students attend special school-wide assemblies in the gym and in the Hervey Ross '46 Auditorium, Warner Theater, and have access to Kellner Student Center, a favorite after-school haven for promising pool sharks and ping-pong champs.
Worcester Academy also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities to pique our students' interests. Many students elect to participate in athletics or the arts -- or both -- as well as clubs and community service activities.

| | "Learning to think. Thinking about what you’ve learned. Discovering what’s modern. Appreciating what’s past. Passionate teachers who care. And challenge you to care even more. Preparing for the future. Not just opening books, but rolling up your sleeves. Being taught to ask the right questions. And learning to question the answers. Flexing your intellect. Pushing your limits. Knowing it’s cool to be smart."
